I see everything that opens each week. I walk out on a movie maybe once every two months. When its super-boring and/or super-painful to watch. Like mind-numbingly stupid etc. Unfortunately this was the case.
I like the main actors, I respect the director and writers that worked on this, yet the result was unbearable for me. It seemed very formulaic, cheap, didn't trust the audience to be smart enough to understand certain things so there was a lot of dialoguesplaining, (I hate that), the world didn't seem complex enough, none of their characters were really interesting, the dead father trauma is SO used by now and on top of it all it didn't look visually interesting either.
I really tried. I stayed for more than an hour. But couldn't take it anymore. The kid was acting well though. But he was given a shit script to chew through. Same with McConaughey, his dialogue was maybe the most painful to bear.
Anyone has seen it and liked it? What did you enjoy about it?

If I had the time to do that, I'd save it for the better reviewed films unless you really want to see it. Something like The Dark Tower didn't seem worth it.

Something like The Dark Tower didn't seem worth it. since I see everything, it includes both the good and the bad. But usually I can stay through. this one was unbearable though… odd with such talented cast.

The biggest problem with it was that it was a great big pile of "Meh". Which is almost worse than if it were objectively bad.
Idris Elba was an amazing Roland, but I am fairly certain he had less screen time than Jake or Walter. Jake's Mom was almost more developed than Roland.
I realized upon thinking about it, that if anyone saw just this movie, and you asked them what they thought The Dark Tower book series was about, I can almost guarantee that they would say:
"The Dark Tower is the story of a young boy named Jake who has special powers and his travels with his mentor named Roland who teaches him how to become a gunslinger. He becomes the hero of Mid-world."
Because THAT is what this movie was the first chapter of...it is certainly not the first chapter of Roland's story.

Pale, lifeless imitation of Star Wars mythology (but isn't pretty much everything since the original Star Wars?).
I'm not sure if it's just this movie or the original book series as well.
The Last Gunslinger -- The Last Jedi
The Man in Black -- Dark Lord of the Sith
Jake -- Padawan
The Shine -- The Force
Also, why did they have to use a portal to go to Keystone Earth in order to use a portal to go back to Midworld to find the Sith Lord's -- I mean the Man in Black's -- lair? They couldn't find that on Midworld?
Obviously, an excuse for the fish-out-of-water stuff in New York City, which was cute but not as developed or effective as it could have been.
So, kind of on the same level as The Last Witch Hunter.
Although Idris Elba is excellent as always, regardless of the material he's given to work with.
And the Excalibur reference is cool.
Note to Matthew McConnaughey: Next time you play a bad guy, try to channel your Lincoln commercial persona.

well it is my job to write about movies so… I should see the whole thing :-). So whenever possible I try to stay till the end. But this one just was too painful to suffer through. So you're a movie critic? Anyway, what is your top movie so far this year? I haven't seen as many movies as in 2016 but is it only me who find 2017 to be rather disappointing? I mean, at this point in time last year I watched and knew some of the movies I've seen were Oscar worthy or had quality to them but I got nothing so far this year, except maybe Dunkirk ? The disappointments seems to pile up really fast compared to the surprises and good movies. I didn't have high expectations for all of those but Life, The Mummy, Lost City of Z, Atomic Blonde, Alien Covenant, War of the Planet of the Apes, Ghost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Kong Skull Island were all subpar in my book. I got a bad feeling about Blade Runner 2049 but it's one I hope will do better than expected.

From what I have read, it's not supposed to be: And while that's true, this film took the Dark Tower away from Roland and turned it into a YA series about a kid named Jake. I'm not familiar with the series outside of the trailers and a couple articles, but are there like half a dozen books about Roland and the man in black? The characters have gotten a lot of "screen time" already, so it's not exactly bad writing or unfair to introduce someone new. It's like complaining about Luke Skywalker not been the focus of the new trilogy.

It's like complaining about Luke Skywalker not been the focus of the new trilogy. Jake is part of the books, and is a major part of the books. But it's Roland's story through and through. And unfortunately, calling this film a sequel to the books gives an improper idea of what happens in the books. The best analogy I can come up with is if you called Harry Potter a sequel series to Game of Thrones. Or better yet, a sequel to Game of Thrones that focused on Hot Pie or Hoster Tully with Arya showing up for a little bit...that might be a story worth telling, but it wouldn't, and shouldn't be called Game of Thrones.
