Why is it that you never hear of hauntings where the story goes back just a few years? I've never heard of a ghost dressed like they were from the 1980s, with the big hair, spandex, etc. Seems like in most stories, the ghosts are from the 1800s - early 1900s.

Maybe you had to be from an era that actively believed in ghosts and hauntings to become a haunting ghost ? Living people are now more skeptical about such things and so perhaps more recent spirits don't hang around like they used to.
The ghost/spirit/whatever that was in my house died in the early part of the 20th Century. Never seen, only heard and probably too young to have heard of ghosts so maybe the theory has flaws.

I've noticed this as well.
Also, why are there no ghosts of cavemen or neanderthals? Is it possible that ghosts have an 'expiration date' which may explain why people only see ghosts from a certain time period?

Well, for the most part, the angry ghosts have been wronged or were killed in some horrific way that was not able to be solved so they got no justice to the person who did it. Nowadays with everyone being on video cameras everywhere and social media bragging about how they killed someone, justice is swift and hard. And DNA testing is the best it has been in years.
there are stories of ghosts who come back to visit -- nothing is keeping them in their place, they just like to visit loved ones and such.

My mom saw my dad one week after he died.
Can't get much more modern than that.

My mom saw my dad one week after he died. Can't get much more modern than that. I know, but that's not what he meant. He meant those ghosts who are either residual [keep on coming back and reliving the same actions] or poltergeists who terrorize the home owners/those living in that dwelling. a relative coming back once or twice is not what he meant. he also might have meant the famous ones like the ones caught on camera that can't be debunked. The brown lady of rynham hall This is the Amityville house... and this was taken in 1976 but did not realize this until 1979. The killings were done in 1974 and that is the spitting image of 9 year old John Matthew. my fave ghost in the entire world... [aside from Anne Boleyn and Marie Antoinette...] Chloe, The Myrtles plantation slave...

I did not say every story, i said most stories. Here are a few more that I have known of for years... I am sure there are plenty more, that I don't know about. SIX from Unsolved Mysteries that involved spirits who died after 1959... 1960 February 23rd. Frank Wilson died of a heart attack on his way to work. late one night, in 1982, Frank entered the bedroom of his daughter Margaret, and asked her to pen a letter for him, to include in the family "memory book" gift, Margaret was making for Teresa Wilson, Frank's "sweetheart" & loving wife, on her 80th birthday. 1970 December 17th. Karen Walker died from cancer. The next night, Karen made her presence known to her fiance, Jim... Later, Karen communicated with her parents too... 1974... In February of 1989, little Heidi Wyrick encountered the neighborhood spirits of James S. Gordy (Died in 1974) and Catherine Kelley Ledford's Uncle "Kahn" Lawn (Died in 1957). 1975 March 22th. 11:08 PM. Clermont, Florida. John W. Hardin was trying to put out an intentionally set fire involving his pickup truck sitting in his driveway, when he was murdered by a shotgun blast. The case was unsolved at least through 2007. In 1990, it was believed that the spirit that haunts John W. Hardin's former home is John W. Hardin himself. 1977 February 21st. 9:00 PM. A hospital respiratory technician, Teresita Basa, was murdered by Allan Showery. The Police had no leads and could not solve the case. 6 months later, Teresita Basa's spirit communicated with a co-worker and told her about the details involving her murder. This information solved the case. 1994 June 6th. After 2:00 AM. Christine Skubish was travelling with her three year old son Nick Skubish along Highway 50, El Dorado County, Nevada... When they failed to arrive at their destination, they were both reported missing... Late in the evening, of June 11th, a couple was travelling the same stretch of road, when they saw a naked woman lying motionless on the side of the road. Concerned for their own safety, they did not stop, but they did stop at the nearest telephone booth, and contacted the police. Police tried searching the road shortly after the call, but could not find the naked woman, and could not located the exact spot where she had been sighted. Since this was at night, it was too difficult to give the area a proper search... The next morning, the area was searched again. A small child's tennis shoe was found on the road, and the police pulled over to investigate. Police learned that during the night of June 6th, Christine Skubish must have fallen asleep at the wheel of her car, it went off the road, going down a steep embankment, and came to rest just out of view of the highway traffic passing by. Christine Skubish had been killed instantly. She was still fully clothed, and buckled into her seat. Nick had survived the crash and was not injured... He had stayed at the crash scene with his dead mother. However the roof of the car had been sheared off, and for 5 days and nights, Nick suffered through hot afternoon temperatures, and very cold dark nights...all alone. Nick was taken to a hospital, where doctors estimated that Nick only had about an hour and a half left to live, at the time police had found him at the crash scene... It is believed that, if the naked woman had not been seen along the side of the road, Nick would not have survived. People believe that Christine Skubish's spirit was the naked woman.

The brown lady of rynham hall I thought that one was debunked... As I recall that photo was taken before 1950. This is the Amityville house... and this was taken in 1976 but did not realize this until 1979. The killings were done in 1974 and that is the spitting image of 9 year old John Matthew. I have heard some people claim this was not a spirit, but that it is one of the investigators that night... but that has not be proven. I think the photo is genuine. Chloe, The Myrtles plantation slave... The Myrtles plantation. Lots of creepy ghost stories about that place. That's one place I never want to visit, even in the day time. Again, as far as I know, all the ghosts involved deaths that took place before 1950.

That is NOT what the OP was talking about. he was just commenting on the most ghost stories out there are from the earlier part of the last century. he even mentioned how we don't see/know of any stories/have any photographic proof of someone with bellbottoms and tiedyed shirts. or tight, bleached jeans, pink high heals and ankle socks with a ruffle fringe. he was commenting on the fact that we don't have proof of period ghosts from the 70' or 80's. although, a friend of a friend of the family saw an apparition of 'friend of the family girl' sitting on the kitchen floor of FOTFG's apartment just staring into space. turns out it wasn't FOTFG at all and the apparition disappeared. the apparition was wearing bellbottoms from the 70's and had long stringy dirty hair strewn down over her face.

Feologild Oakes Well, I don't quite know what my own feelings on ghosts and goblins ("ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night," as the old rhyme goes) are--I suppose one would say I'm agnostic on the subject, though I'm [probably unduly] extremely interested in said subject all the same. With that said, there's an old theory in parapsychology (hypothesized as early as 1940, and noted if not analyzed earlier than that) that we now call the " Stone Tape Theory," after the BBC's 1972 telefilm of the same name. This blog post also explains it very well (under the "Another View" heading, specifically "Why ghosts pass through walls"). Simply put, the concept is that ghosts are not the spirits of the dead at all--at least, not in a conscious, thinking way--but rather the "recorded" and "played-back" memories of a place. The emotions there were so strong that they imprinted themselves on the very essence of the [possibly mystic] location, and then occur again in shadowy form. That would explain, in a way, why there are fewer "ghosts" nowadays than in past times--the very essence of a haunting would require strong emotions with strong ties to a physical location. We are on the move so much nowadays that this concept of "importing" is in many ways difficult to fathom. We tend, also, to put our emotions more into technology--obsessions with cellphones, computers, social media--and less into family interaction or place-stability. Again, this may all be the most bloated nonsense you've ever heard--I don't even know what my beliefs on this matter are. I find it best to keep an open mind and present both viewpoints, though. Hope that helps a bit!

Salz... I mentioned the residual hauntings before but he didn't notice. I guess he can't read the big words.
I also mentioned more or less what you mentioned way before but I also added that we had so many 'period' hauntings because of a lack of 'justice' for the unfortunate souls. Back in the olden times before DNA was so attainable and everyone had a record, there was no way to officially pinpoint a suspect or anyone as a murderer. That is the reason why Lizzie Borden was able to get away with the double murder.
so the residual ghosts come back to where they were killed in a way to try get the current tenant's attention, or sometimes not at all- they have no idea they have died and they are just living their life.

deembastilleYes, indeed, I did notice your post on the matter--some excellent thoughts, for which I'm thankful. Should we one day prove the existence of revenants, I believe it would be in the form of "Stone Tape"-style residual hauntings: as humans, we can impart remarkable energy and meaning to a place, especially where something deeply emotional or tragic took place, and the idea that that very energy can linger on afterwards seems not illogical to me. Poltergeist activity (if such a thing exists at all), on the other hand, I would attribute to something quite different.

Actually ghost lore has many recent spirits. Amityville is one famous example.

Actually ghost lore has many recent spirits. Amityville is one famous example. Though--if I may speak as someone who grew up not thirty minutes away from Amityville--that has been nigh-completely debunked.
