He also played for an eternity on arguably the best batting surface in English Cricket at Essex..... it’s still a remarkable effort. Hobbs, Hutton and Hammond must have been some players, given the amount of stickies and wet pitches they’d have encountered....

Hmm....
Don't understand it, but I do watch the highlights for fun.
I make light of the fact when a batter hits a 'six', I go "HOME RUN!!"
As well, in watching said highlights, I was so proud of myself one time because I was able to confirm that a batter was out LBW (Leg Before Wicket).

On salter. He would have enjoyed the final. He preferred 240 games and defended England, even during the 2013-14 Ashes and the 2015 WC when IMO, their performances were indefensible. No idea what he would have made of the "6 or 5" call, but he was a stickler for laws, I remember arguing with him many times about "the law being an ass." I think he would have advocated either for fewer wickets to win or a shared trophy. Rohan I'm not sure. He hated England and a controversial finish may have had him up in arms. Salter remains my fav sports board member till date after you. I hated Rohan a lot. The reason being not that he thoroughly disliked Indian cricket team. BCCI is one of the most corrupt organisations on this planet and I myself hate Indian board and how the cricket is run in India. But the reason being that Rohan completely hated Indians as a group. He even went on to post his utter dislike against Indian food on an OT topic on the sports board. Also, he was sort of a guy who almost believed Australians cannot cheat under any circumstances. Interesting that I just came to know India is playing a cricket match against WI when 70% of the match is over. Just goes to show how cricket is not interesting when Aus, Eng, NZ or Ind are not involved or unless two equally matched lesser teams are playing each other.

I told you about those "Aussies never cheat" types in the sandpaper conversation. We never cheat. And if we do there's a reason. And if you're caught red handed you're hung out to dry and suspended for a year for something that should have been a 2 game suspension max.
I'm surprised Rohan hated Indians. He was something of a lefty. A real Vote Shorten, "LNP is corrupt, Labor and Unions are pure as the driven snow" type who would buy into all the Plibersek narratives. Of course The Bolt Report/ ayelewis / Power Ranger (possibly? Not 100%) was even more tiresome in the opposite direction.

He specifically disliked only Indians. Not Pakistanis, not WI or Sri Lankans. Only Indians. Power Ranger is not aye lewis. Although power ranger trolled on Indian cinema board for years on the original IMDB. He seems to be amused by a specific Indian community - Malayalam people (people from state of Kerala). His posts were quite disgusting on old IMDB but strong moderation here keeps him in check.

Virat Kohli got his 42nd 100 in ODIs but the more important news was Shreyas Iyer getting quick 65. Could he establish himself in Indian middle order?

I think it is very appropriate to call him "Lawrence of Australia".

Ah, reminiscing about the old board. Rohan, Salter, Dangerous Dave, Tropicana Funk Master, various India fans popping in from off the Indian Cinema board and scurrying away just as quick, like Himalaya and ST10iG. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember Hitchcock or too many other England fans except the odd excursion by Carl. There were 2 other Aussies who I can’t remember. And of course, bh_tafe, pimpinainteasy and aj_june were and still around !
Rohan was an odd one, but Victorians tend to be odd ones. If I remember correctly, he was sort of on the fence with the monkey gate fiasco. Salter fell more toward the Aussies are pricks side, but not the whole way. I was, and still am, vehemently against the BCCI account of the events, and still stick to the fact that Sachin Tendulkar as the other batsman changed his tune not once, not twice, but three times in the space of a few days as to what happened and what was said (First, Harbhajan said nothing to Symonds. Then, he said something to Symonds but Tendulkar didn’t hear it. Then, again, Harbhajan said nothing to any Australian player but just in general, aloud, to no one in particular, Then finally, it was something in Hindi or some other non-English language that sounds suspiciously like monkey, but clearly, obviously, wasn’t monkey.) and therefore his entire integrity must be questioned. And if the last account of events were true, then why did it take Indian management 3 days to come up with the simple ‘different language’ excuse ? The other interesting thing about Rohan was his hatred of Muralitharan. Refused to believe that he was anything other than a chucker. Salter had a fantastic depth of knowledge about the game and it’s history, one I am truly envious of. I know a bit of history, but it paled against the man from Western Australia.

I didn't really follow Monkeygate as I was working at a Chennai orpganage at the time. First I heard of it was when I travelled to Kumbakonam for Pongal with my friend Pramodh (I would later propose to my second wife at his wedding) who said something to me along the lines of "don't talk about the cricket today. Something bad happened. People are angry with Australians."
By the time I got home the deaths of first Clinton Grybas and then Heath Ledger had knocked it out of the news cycle. When I watched highlights of the game, what struck me was that the luckiest two people in the world were Steve Bucknor and Marc Benson that people were talking about monkeys instead of them. What a fucking wretched performance from those two. Not only did they make some shocking decisions against both teams, but their behaviour at many times enflamed the situation.
I think Rohan's attitude on Murali can be explained by two things. 1) Aussies never cheat and 2) Murali's main rival was a Victorian. Murali's a cheat (in spite of sports science saying otherwise) is a a catch-all argument why Warne must be better. I don't know if you remember him basically saying Merv Hughes had to carry that bum McDermott around his whole career. Hughes is Victorian, Billy wasn't.
