I was watching NHK when the latest missile was launched from North Korea. They picked up on it about three minutes after the launch and warned people in selected provinces to take shelter. They then indicated when it had passed over Hokkaido and entered the ocean. The "real time" nature of this reminded me of the first scene in Damnation Ally (1977) in which a missile launch against the US is detected and the resulting retaliation follows. It was a chillingly superb scene, but the rest of the film is pretty poor.
I was wondering what other movies might have a single good scene, sort of like a "rose in the toilet bowl" so to speak.

...while most of this film is excellent black comedy, it is hard to duplicate the final scene in Dr Strangelove...

Galaxy of Terror, a somewhat obscure sci-fi/horror movie from 1981. If any of you have seen it, you know what scene I'm talking about...if you haven't seen it, it's not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't call the scene "good" per se, but it's certainly memorable.

That would be the one...I like the description of "attack scene", very subtle way to put it.

The movie isnt that bad but Mr. Frost has a GREAT opening scene (where Alan Bates goes to visit Jeff Goldblum) and nothing that follows could match it.

Like yours, I'm also thinking of a scene in a movie with a missile strike. Testament is about a nuclear war and how a family and a small town try to survive and cope with the aftermath. The most memorable scene is just before and then when the missile strikes. They do a really great job of building up the suspense and then have a real creepy and scary feel to it. It is just as powerful or even more so then those scenes in nuclear strike movies where they show everything getting destroyed or people getting blasted.

The Deer Hunter? OK, maybe that's unfair, but if ever it's on I only want to watch it for the Russian roulette scene.
The opening from Spectre was the best thing about that film, IMO.

Duel of the Fates lightsaber fight at the end of Phantom Menace.
Hector vs Achilles in Troy.
Val Kilmer in all his scenes in Batman Forever.

The scene at the end of Knowing where everyone is panicking on the street. Mostly because of Beethoven playing in the background.

The best scene in the movie Cruel Intentions is the memorial service at the end. The look on the face of Ryan Phillipe pretty much says "FUCK YOU" to one character in particular.

Agreed with most of the entries here...to contribute more...
-"T3" ending scene. I wanted to like this movie as much as any Arnold/Ellison/Terminator fan...but it was kind of a steamer. Except the last 4-5 minutes. The music, narration, CGI, etc, were really above par...and remain the standout stuff I took away from this movie. (All of the above, but also I thought Nick Stahl was great in the whole movie)
-I thought the saber battle at the end of "Revenge of the Sith" was the saving grace of an otherwise sort of bloated movie. It was awesome and delivered on the promises "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" hinted at when I read it as a kid. The delivery of some of the lines is pretty weird in some instances, but the action/sets are more than enough to distract from that.
"Troll 2." One of my favorite bad movies...and the "they're eating her, and then they're going to eat me" scene gets a lot of love, but for me it was the witch (?) banging the dude in the RV with popcorn flying all over the place. Complete with a General MIDI porno-sax track. So absurdly good it made me love the movie even more.

How about Forrest Gump when he meets his son.
That movie has nosedived out of my re-watches, yet that scene is one of the finest of the 90's.
B+ for the film btw, I probably watched it too much.
