Which of these two very similar movies do you prefer? Both parody the same general genre (murder mysteries) and feature a similar comedy style, but... What say you? (By the by, I recently attended one of those "murder mystery dinner theater" events, this one based on Clue. It was fun, and I got a prize for guessing the murderer correctly!)

Clue's a fun film, but Murder By Death has me laughing more from beginning to end.

Murder By Death. Didn't Clue have some gimmick where they filmed several endings with the murderer being different people and movie goers were urged to go see each ending? Kind of an obvious cash grab.

I have not seen M b D but I will now.
Clue was always fun. Leslie Ann Warren's laugh was embarrassing and grating.

Kind of an obvious cash grab. Yes, but it wasn't as obvious as that. They gave all three endings to the movie theaters and the movie theaters would play each endings separately. Ending A would be shown at the 1:00 showing. Ending B at 3:30. Ending C at the 6:00. Ending A at the 8:30... The vhs/DVDs have all the endings with the explanation cards (like from the silent films).

Interesting to see that Murder by Death is winning at this point. It's my preferred choice of these two as well, but Clue has been gaining such a cult following over the years that I must say I'm a bit surprised (in a good way).

I also am surprised...but I voted for Clue. I personally think that it does a far better job of telling a good story (It's a legit mystery) while not losing any of the silliness. It's friggin hilarious. It also makes complete narrative sense no matter what ending you work with. The dialogue and performances are also just so nuanced and fantastic from top to bottom. If you go down the cast list, to a person, they give one of the best performances of their career in this film. Murder by Death is great, without question, I laugh a lot. But to me, it's just over the top silliness that doesn't work in any way as a narrative...it's just a bunch of tropes thrown together. The performances are all good, but they all hinge on you being familiar with a wide swath of classic detective stories and films in order to get any of the subtlety. Alec Guinness completely steals the film, and while everyone else is good, I don't think anyone would say that Wang is one of Peter Sellers' best performances. Or that Perrier is quintessential James Coco. And Capote is just being his amazing self... Just my 2 cents. P.S. Kudos to Eileen Brennan for being in both.

They usually have all three endings when it's shown on cable as well. I can't remember which one was "This is what really happened" though.

If I'm not mistaken, poelzig, it's the one in which Tim Curry is the killer, though my favorite is the one in which Lesley Ann Warren is.

I started to post that I thought that was the "real" ending but I was unsure if I only thought that because it was the one I remembered best. I also misremembered Sigourney Weaver being in Clue so I just kept quiet. Thanks for the post.

If I'm not mistaken, poelzig , it's the one in which Tim Curry is the killer, though my favorite is the one in which Lesley Ann Warren is. Well....he shot the singing telegram girl, but they mostly all killed someone. Scarlett killed the cop. Mustard killed the motorist. Green took out "Wadsworth"/Mr. Boddy at the very end. Peacock killed the cook. Plum killed the scruffy "Mr. Boddy"/the butler. White killed maid Yvette. And they almost all had reasons for offing their person. Scarlett's cop was getting paid hush money by Scarlett because she ran an illegal call girl Service. Mustard's motorist was his driver during the war and knew he sold military plane radio parts on the black Market. Peacock's cook was her cook and she knew all the dirt that went on. Plum... Although he didn't kill the ST girl, he did have an affair with her while treating her. IDK why he really killed boddy, other than to get this shit over and done with. White's maid was a) an employee of Scarlett's and was the Mistress of MR. White. Green there's a reason I left him until the end. He turns out to be a very heterosexual FBI agent, undercover.

Sorry to have to ask, it's just in case someone comes along who hasn't already seen the movie but wants to. Well, yes, everybody killed somebody (boy, that statement sounds funny), but "Wadsworth" (i.e., the real Mr. Boddy) is the one who planned the whole thing, right?
Yeah, that last line is one of my favorite jokes in the film!

My computer all but exploded on me and for almost three weeks I have been posting via my mobile. Have about 20 minutes left of MbD and I have to say... Clue. MbD I'd painful with sporadic snippets of 'comedy'.
