Has there ever been an unsuccessful TV show that spawned such a successful series of feature films? This only had six episodes. Frank Drebin continued on in his own style that reminded me of a funny version of Lee Marvin in "M Squad"...
I lived in L.A. when this was shown in 1982, and the manager of The Dodgers, Tommy Lasorda had a cameo in one episode. I just saw him attending a playoff game. It reminded me of this series.

There is of course the general overprint of a Quinn Martin show construction.

Who's on first?Interesting that such a close parody would be made of something over twenty years old that practically nobody would remember. The set and some lines of dialogue are practically identical.

Police Squad was a great show that was cancelled by a desperate network that was struggling to find something that could compete with Magnum PI. they replaced Police Squad with a sketch comedy that also failed but did not spawn any movies.
To answer your question, no. I think Police Squad is by far the most successful failure in TV history. Also, it had the same feel as many other police shows, not just the lesser known "M Squad".

Oh just a little hunchback at the office.
PS worked better than the Naked Gun movies-the format was more suited for the comedy skits.
Plus Abraham Lincoln had more to do.

Hilarious show. Leslie Nielsen is a riot as Frank Drebin. I especially love the shows' mockery of "freeze frame" endings.

Haha! Yeah that was what I noticed when I caught an episode in syndication. The freezeframe ending.

Haha! Yeah that was what I noticed when I caught an episode in syndication. The freezeframe ending. (characters freezing, falling down) Lt.Drebin:"I asked her if she'd come to the club right away, but she suggested the clubg Flamingo"{(goes, club's filled with flamingos doing what they do best: standing on one leg. Meanwhile, in LIttle Italy, NY, the Leaning tower of Pisa is shown.)

"Let's talk in the Japanese garden." We see them walk into a room with Japanese people standing motionless in potted plants.

I personally preferred the more straight-ahead slapstick and gags of the Naked Gun feature films, but Police Squad was certainly a funny show.
Each episode was solid and man, every one had so many great jokes in them. Sometimes I had to re-watch an episode in case I missed one.
Of course Nielsen was also great.
"I did live with a man once, but that was just for a couple of years. Usual slurs, rumours, innuendos - people didn't understand."

Hilarious show with a knowing sense of satire. You can't go wrong with the Zucker-Zucker-Abrahams team at the helm. Should have been a big hit series.

I love how the special guest stars get killed off in the first few minutes and have nothing to do with the rest of the episode.

For the six episodes of Police Squad! were televised, it was my favorite show on the air.
Always thought it was better than either of the Airplane movies, as Police Squad! had to squeeze all their jokes into about 24 minutes.
Just an hilarious series.
