"The party's just beginning!"
A highly skilled crew of terrorists lead out by a former CIA agent now turned into a complete madman Bill Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) decides to crash the big party which is taking place at the former battleship of USS Missouri and then turn it into an unpredictable warzone, all ready for total chaos.
However, there is one other unannounced member onboard with them, one which just happens to be the martial arts expert and former decorated Navy Seal leader Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) who now works down below as the kitchen Chief, and he is not too happy about having his hard work getting shot to pieces by a bunch of nasty party poopers.
What is there to say beside that it is very likely Steven Seagal at his very commercial peak, delivering a big budget action movie which is pretty much Die Hard out on the sea but it ended up working very well and should have gone onto be just one of many hits in the coming years, however I guess Seagal's larger than life ego got in the way and he never would reach the same critical and commercial success again.
I really love this movie. It is a classic and one I have seen many, many times over with my dad over the years and it is nice to have something in common as we both get a kick out of watching this entertaining and action packed movie every now and then.
Starring the rapdily rising action star that is Steven Seagal he once again teamed up with director Andrew Davis (Above the Law) as it was time to move the tough inner city street cop far out of the gritty and violent neighborhoods and into something much bigger.
It also helped out to include some fantastic character actors such as Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey in the villain parts, which they surely did very well, and I believe it was the last film of Seagal where we really got to see the "classic" main bad guys/villain type, where as in the later years they were just not even close, more random and forgettable, here however Tommy and Gary is a complete riot as the terrible two who end up stealing the show with their colorful display of clowning around to just being literally insane.
And lets not forget the "icing" on the cake, which is of course the stunning former Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak who did a pretty good job as the wisecracking eyecandy sidekick who comes with all kind of neat surprises and talents along the way.
The sequel which was made not long after the disastrous commercial failure that was On Deadly Ground (1994) is not really that bad but it suffers from a lack of great villains (even though it did star some very familiar baddies it ended up being a little letdown for my part) and I also like to think Erika should have gotten involved as well as the new sidekick in Dark Territory (1995) was awful and annoying as hell, but I guess all in all it was an okay sequel but still suffered (for me that is) in a similar way to that of Van Damme, Sly and Arnie's films of the same period during the mid 90s, which is that the film had big monster budgets and all the seemingly right tools with it but somehow felt "generic" and not as gritty or memorable as their earlier stuff.
A third film have been discussed and planned (I think) for years now but I guess the only chance is either through some DTV/VOD release either starring Seagal himself or some completely unkown east european "actor", that or Hollywood just ends up showing the creativity once again and end up remaking it.
