Disney/Marvel’s superpower-packed Avengers: Infinity War shot off with a $39M start in 21 material markets at the international box office on Wednesday. It opened No. 1 in all release markets, and in many set industry record launches for Day One. This is a Thanos-sized start.

It only made 39 million?
Guys it's time to cancel the MCU and reboot.
Time to bring Chris Nolan in so he can show Marvel, Fox, Sony and Zack Snyder how to make a REAL comic book movie!

"And so summer begins early in late April. We have very early industry estimates showing Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War between $40M-$45M for Thursday night, and west coast showtimes have yet to kick in. Should that projection maintain into the night, it would easily be the best Marvel preview ever, stepping over Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6M) and the second best ever tying with Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($45M) and filing behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens first night ($57M).

39m in Thursday previews domestic, easily the biggest for Marvel. OW record still in reach, but those 300m ow talk appears dead.

Hmm $39 million....that's behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. That's $18 million behind Force Awakens at the same point so I don't think it'll make the record after all.
"On Thursday, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War added 22 markets and $55M to bring the total to $95M over two days at the international box office."
"The UK assembled $8.9M for Disney’s 3rd highest opening day and the biggest MCU opening day of all time with 89% market share."
I known for a fact that The Force Awakens has the highest opening day in UK and that did $14.3 million which is a good chunk more. Perhaps another sign that it won't open to those kind of heights.

I say lower expectations.
I saw 3 kids around 10 years old who were openly angry/upset while leaving the theater. If that is common, then younger kids won't be begging their parents to take them back to see it twice.

Yeah going by their numbers at the moment it will only a tad below The Last Jedi's opening day but will be the #2 highest opening weekend.
Black Panther did rise considerably from first expectations. So there's still a chance. The reality would need to be 7% more than that high end.

From what I've just read, The Force Awakens also had a holiday Monday which gives a boost to it's Sunday total because people don't have to go to work the next day so it gets more people into the later showings.
I'd still say The Force Awakens had more hype for it than this movie so I wouldn't be too surprised if it doesn't beat it.
No idea what will though if this doesn't.

These movies are generally speaking, overrated. 7.6/10 is probably more like 6.6/10 and that isn't good enough to make me want to shoehorn myself into a packed cinema, next to a bunch of sweaty nerds with personal hygiene issues, fucking around on their iphones and talking too loudly for 3 hours. I'll wait a week or so.
Innit? Ugh. The only thing worse than going to the cinema is going on opening weekend. It's just fucking unpleasant for the reasons you mentioned. How much does it cost to see a movie where you live? It's outrageous where I am now. I used to go to the movies 2-3 times a month when I lived in northeastern Pennsylvania, where everyone is poor and the pizza is delicious and the movies are cheap AF, but my personal theater attendance has plummeted in the last few years. Here in the 8th largest city in America where gas is $3.55 for regular unleaded the first show of the day at AMC, Regal & Reading is $7-$9 dollars ($8.50 for recliner seats/Angelica theater)

No official holiday on Monday for TFA , but schools were on holiday break

Well IW does have a longer running time than TFA which means it can't jam as many showings in a day. That will affect its BO numbers.

If it gets close enough, Disney will nudge the numbers over.

If it gets close enough, Disney will nudge the numbers over. They don't need to. Who cares about domestic, its breaking records overseas

They don't need to. Who cares about domestic, its breaking records overseas People have always made more attention to the domestic opening day and weekend because there isn't really a suitable apples to apples comparison of its done on a worldwide basis.
