There is also the fact that PD isn't even registered on this board so he definitely hasn't said anything on this thread. I only just noticed that she's talking about skyhawk. God, she's hopeless. PD/Skyhawk there's no difference, I can't tell them apart. I accept that they are not socks, but they are still indistinguishable.

1. Lolwut? Is this your "Buddhism is atheism" again? 2. Not outside the USA no, they don't. 3. Again, not outside the USA. When was the last time any "religious" person entered the night club and tried to impose her views on you?
There are many religious options that allow for atheism. You not liking reality doesn't change it. And yes, pretty much all atheists live around religious people. Again, as most are religious, that's a given. And this board has plenty of non-American atheists who live around religious people, myself included. And you're wrong a third time. Check into the religious laws in Uganda. Look at the Arab nations. Israel only recognizes marriages approved by a religious council within its borders. I get that intelligent conversation is beyond you, but no one was talking about nightclubs. We have a Christian Heritage Party here in Canada (not that they stand any chance of getting elected). I've had more than a few religious people try to impose their views on me — it's relatively rare here, but people vary and aren't the cheap stereotypes you imagine. Religious people come in to your dressing room to preach? I don't think so! Where else would you ever meet a religious person? Let me know when the Christian Heritage party actually get elected!

Try having a grown-up help you read. No one said anything about dressing rooms. Or maybe that's your way of saying you couldn't find anything wrong with what I actually wrote. As usual. So you were wrong. Glad you recognize it. Now, try to develop some morality and you could even admit such things in future.

Sigh. Of course he never said that all atheists are Buddhist but then neither did I. Stop distorting what I said. "atheists are all religious because Buddhism is an atheist religion".. Please explain how what you said does not imply all atheists are buddhist. Like I said, you weren't making sense, and PD (you actually meant someone completely different - skyhawk) would never say something so nonsensical. See, this isn't true, because there are plenty of gods and supernatural beings in buddhism.

Has anybody managed to come up with examples of atheists who obsess over religion yet? Just curious.

I don't know of any atheists who obsess over religion. There may be some I suppose, just because people are such a varied lot, but it would be a tiny minority. Of course a lot of atheists are interested, even fascinated with religion, for various reasons. I find it fascinating myself, because for the life of me I cannot work out how people can make their brains buy into it. It's like living in a world where 90% of people think genuinely believe that babies are brought by the stork, or electricity is produced by little fairies carrying little buckets of it down the wires. I am on a mission to understand how people can believe. I also seek to subject my own positions to cross examination, but that's become a distant second over the years because there's few who want to try and none who are able to give it a good go. Well, I might could help with your mission to understand how people can believe; I was brain-washed into it from the time I was born. I started questioning in my teens because logic and reason kicked in, thanks to public education, but it took years for me to finally define myself as an atheist. Sometimes I have small relapses, wondering if there is a god and he is just cruel, or indifferent. That brain-washing is really hard to overcome, even when you accept the scientific method of thought, know that you are alive because of advances in medical science, not because of prayer, and see the logical things that natural law produces.
Another reason is that society bombards us with religious thought; TV shows depict scenarios of someone praying for a patient, and the patient, above all odds, has a full recovery. I live in a small town in a strongly religious part of the country, and I can go to the grocery store and overhear people talking big and loud about the new minister down at the church and how full of the spirit he is. I am not included in the fabric of my community because I don't go to church or have a child in public school.
Religion makes it very hard to question anything; questioning is very negatively responded to, so most people just stay in whatever religion they were brought up in. My mother is, at 94, still a card-carrying Southern Baptist, and it makes having a relationship with her very difficult. I change the subject a lot in conversations. So I am still pressured by family to be a believer.
And some want to believe; they miss their husband or father who has passed away so much that they want to 'know' that they will be reunited after death.
And some folks are just lazy, and don't want to take responsibilities for their own actions, so they can say, "I don't know why god won't help me find a job/heal my illness/send the right person to marry." They like that whole 'we don't understand god's plan sometimes' out when it's really just blame-shifting.
I also think it's a need for people to feel included and feel like they're a part of something bigger than what the world has to offer. I grew up as a church-going Christian until I was a teenager. I understand the brain-washing and how easy it is as well. I remember when i was 13 years old and started going to teen night events at church. They were actually really fun, but there's one moment in particular that I remember. There was an older teen there who was a wonderful singer, and she was on stage singing a gospel song. The rest of us were waving our arms around in the air, and I felt so incredibly alive in that moment. Looking back, I don't think any God had anything to do with what I was feeling in that moment. I think it was simply a feeling of belonging and thinking I was participating in something bigger than myself. Like you, logic and reasoning started kicking in and I began questioning things. It didn't happen overnight, it was a gradual transition, but I eventually became an atheist. I do not regret my time in the church as a Christian because I did have a lot of great times, but I also have great times as an atheist too. In fact, there was one night in particular five years ago that I felt even more alive than I did that night in church and it had nothing to do with God. I was in an atmosphere with other like-minded people and felt so connected to everyone around me and that sense of belonging is what made me feel alive.

Oh dear you are desperate for attention aren't you DrunkProg? So, what is "I'm not Ada". Kids usually grow out of this bratty kind of indulgence, it doesn't carry on into their 60s. Well Taffy I am manifestly not Ada. Just how big of a moron are you? Mr Self ♥ Admin declared the Ada name up for grabs. Your friend Sammy Slimes took it. So grow up.
