Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your hosts (us) posts our weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. We will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWING
Ghost in the Shell (2017, Rupert Sanders) tv This film is based on the Japanese Anime and is set in the near future where a human (Scarlet Johansson) is saved from a terrible crash and then cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. I have not seen the original anime from start to finish so I was just looking at the film on its singular merits and it was better than I expected. Sure some of the design and effects work feels kinda cheap as well as the audio mix being underwhelming but there is something compelling about the main character and the journey she is on. 6/10
The House (2017, Andrew Jay Cohen) tv This over the top comedy has an over the top premise that see's a couple (Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler) who after the town takes away their daughter's college scholarship, start an illegal casino in their friend's house to make back the money. It has a few moments and the R rated violence helps but ultimately a time waster. 4.5/10
Mercury Rising (1988, Harold Becker) tv Forgettable Bruce Willis thriller that sees Shadowy elements in the NSA target a nine-year old autistic savant for death when he is able to decipher a top secret code. 4/10
REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
Iron Man (2008, Jon Favreau) blu ray The one that started it all (the MCU) still holds up as one of the finest super hero films made. Great casting and structured storytelling makes for a fun viewing. I wish marvel still made them more like this. 8/10
Lord of the Flies (1990, Harry Hook) tv Based on the classic William Golding novel of the same name, this is the second English language adaptation which follows a group of school boys who degenerate into savagery after being stranded on an island. There are some good child performances in this well crafted film, it is slightly different from the book and the original film but it still works. 6/10
Dodgeball (2004, Rawson Marshall Thurber) tv I had only seen this once before and did not really care for it, this time I liked it a little more but found some of the characters too over the top, especially the antagonists. 4.5/10
Man on Fire (2004, Tony Scott) tv This is the 2nd film adaptation of the novel of the same name, this time featuring Denzel Washington in the lead role as aformer assassin who swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect. Half way through director Tony Scott's career he switched to a more MTV fast edit style of film making which I never cared for but this is that style at its worst. It is an ungly ess of a film in that respect but still has some good performances... however Radha Mitchell is really bad in this. 4/10

Iron Man - still one of the best MCU movies. 7.5/10 I know I saw at least part of Man on Fire on TV several years ago. Not sure if I saw the whole thing though. First Time Viewings:
Game Night (2018, John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein) This one has a good cast and is quite funny and entertaining throughout. Towards the end there are a couple twists that felt a bit unnecessary, but I didn't mind them too much, even if they did hurt the film a bit, just by making it more unrealistic. Still I had a good time with this one. 7/10
The Croods (2013, Kirk De Micco & Chris Sanders) This animated film from DreamWorks has a solid story, a good score, fun characters, and a good voice cast. Fun movie. 7/10
Cat People (1982, Paul Schrader) I liked how this one wasn't just the same movie as the original. This one is well made and acted and has some really good scenes here and there. Good score too and the David Bowie song is great too. 7/10
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, Michael Curtiz & William Keighley) This early take on the classic tale of Robin Hood is quite fun. It looks great, has a strong cast, and is well paced and entertaining throughout. 7.5/10
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991, Kevin Reynolds) This one definitely has some good stuff in it, but it didn't quite work for me. I found Costner's Robin Hood a bit bland and the film just felt too long to me. Alan Rickman is very entertaining and the score is really good though. 6.5/10
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993, Mel Brooks) I know I saw part of this on TV when I was a kid, but after watching it I don't think I watched the whole thing. I thought it was pretty funny and entertaining throughout. Sure it's silly, but I had fun with it. 7/10
Night Gallery (1969, Boris Sagal, Steven Spielberg, and Barry Shear) This made for TV movie served as the pilot episode for the series of the same name. It has three segements and I liked all three, but I'm hoping the show is better. 7/10
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012, Eric Darnell & Tom McGrath) This one is a pretty lackluster sequel if you ask me. I like the main characters (though not as much as I do in the first one) and the film is fairly short, so it's still a pretty easy watch at least. 5.5/10
Morning Glory (1933, Lowell Sherman) Katharine Hepburn won her first Oscar for this one and it's her wonderful performance that carries the film. There are a few really good scenes, but Hepburn is what makes it work. 7/10
Repeat Viewings:
Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott) Great stuff. 9/10
Blade Runner 2049 (2017, Denis Villeneuve) Fantastic sequel. 9/10
A Clockwork Orange (1971, Stanley Kubrick) Classic Kubrick. 9/10
Madagascar (2005, Eric Darnell & Tom McGrath) I always enjoyed this when I was a kid, but I wasn't sure how it would hold up now. I'm happy to say that I still find this to be an enjoyable animated film. It has lots of fun characters, some good laughs, and some references to other movies and shows that I definitely didn't get when I was younger. 7/10
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008, Eric Darnell & Tom McGrath) I'm pretty sure I'd only seen this one once or twice before this and I didn't remember much about it. It's not a very good sequel, but I guess it could have been worse. The story is just kind of weak. 5.5/10
Repeat TV Viewings:
True Detective: Season 1 (2014) Brilliant. 10/10
Movie Awards:
BEST FILM - A Clockwork Orange BEST ACTOR - Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) BEST ACTRESS - Katharine Hepburn (Morning Glory) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Sean Young (Blade Runner) BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - Jordan Cronenweth (Blade Runner) BEST SCORE - Vangelis (Blade Runner) BEST SCRIPT - Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange) BEST DIRECTOR - Ridley Scott (Blade Runner)

Iron Man - 9/10 Lord of the Flies - 3/10 Dodgeball - 6/10 Man on Fire - 6/10
Mine: Repeat Views
Lethal Weapon (1987) - 10/10 - DVD Excellent 80s classic. One of my favorite action thrillers.
End of Days (1999) - 5/10 - DVD I saw this years ago. Thought it was just OK. Seeing it again I had the exact same feelings. Its just an OK Arnie film. Good soundtrack though.
Mine: First Time Viewing
In the Name of the King 3: The Last Mission (2014) - 3/10 - DVD Actually I have seen a good amount of Uwe Bolls films and some are actually good. This is not one of them. Basically the film is about a hitman who kidnaps 2 little girls then is sucked into the past. It does not lead up to much. Dumb but almost oddly likable it so dumb.
Love Lies Bleeding (2008) - 5/10 - DVD OK thriller has a young couple on the run after stealing money from a crooked cop played by Christian Slater. Entertaining but has a really poor ending that ruins the film.
Retrograde (2004) - 1/10 - DVD Awful film that cant decide what its going for. Its like a The Thing ripoff with elements of 12 Monkys. Dolph Lundgrens worst film.
Vigilante Diaries (2016) - 2/10 - DVD A action comedy that really tries to be hip but comes off dull.
Death Train (2003) - 4/10 - DVD Simple terrorists take over a train film.
Forfeit (2007) - 4/10 - DVD An armored car guard plans to rob his truck and frame his ex. OK but forgettable.
The Graves (2009) - 4/10 - DVD Two sisters fight a religious cult lead by Tony Todd. Watchable but nothing special.
Ripple Effect (2007) - 1/10 - DVD I like Forest Whitaker but I have no idea what he was thinking staring in this boring as hell trash. I tried like 3 times to see this but I kept losing attention because its so damn dull.
Noise (2007) - 4/10 - DVD Tim Robins plays a guy who goes crazy from car alarms. Odd comedy.

Still I had a good time with this one. 7/10 6.5/10 Fun enough but it doesn't come together in a very interesting way at the end.
The Croods (2013, Kirk De Micco & Chris Sanders) This animated film from DreamWorks has a solid story, a good score, fun characters, and a good voice cast. Fun movie. 7/10 Fun movie with loveable characters and beautiful animation and a good score. Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds are awesome here.
Cat People (1982, Paul Schrader) I liked how this one wasn't just the same movie as the original. This one is well made and acted and has some really good scenes here and there. Good score too and the David Bowie song is great too. 7/10 6/10 Great style but it fails to do much for me on an emotional level and I don't like the erotic fantasy feel of the film. Great song though and the movie definitely has it's moments.
6.5/10 7/10 Flawed but very entertaining. I love the chemisty between Costner and Freeman, I love Rickman's villain and Michael Wincott is awesome too. It also has a memorable score and a lot of cool scenes.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993, Mel Brooks) I know I saw part of this on TV when I was a kid, but after watching it I don't think I watched the whole thing. I thought it was pretty funny and entertaining throughout. Sure it's silly, but I had fun with it. 7/10 Been too long but considering I am not a fan of spoof movies and based on my memory of it, I probably rate it 5.5/10.
Night Gallery (1969, Boris Sagal, Steven Spielberg, and Barry Shear) This made for TV movie served as the pilot episode for the series of the same name. It has three segements and I liked all three, but I'm hoping the show is better. 7/10

The stories here are downright dull.
9/10 Yup
Blade Runner 2049 (2017, Denis Villeneuve) Fantastic sequel. 9/10
A Clockwork Orange (1971, Stanley Kubrick) Classic Kubrick. 9/10 8.5/10
7/10 5.5/10 Best of the franchise but still not very good. The voice acting makes it fun enough here and there.
5.5/10 Come to thnk of it, I don't even know if I finshed either sequel.
Repeat TV Viewings:
True Detective: Season 1 (2014) Brilliant. 10/10 7.5/10 Overrated but good. Episode 1 and 3 are fantastic though. I love Matthew McConaughey's character and performance (he is brilliant and gives the second best performance of any TV show I have ever seen) and he carries the show on his back almost entirely. A big problem is that the show didn't end up going in the direction I was hoping it would and ends with a very cliche Texas Chainsaw Masscare/Silence of the Lambs type episode that I found quite ridiculous and out of place. I am still pissed off at this fact.

Iron Man - still one of the best MCU movies. 7.5/10 I know I saw at least part of Man on Fire on TV several years ago. Not sure if I saw the whole thing though.
Any interest in Lord of the Flies or Ghost in the Shell

Any interest in Lord of the Flies or Ghost in the Shell I'd like to watch the 60's Lord of the Flies first. I didn't like the anime Ghost in the Shell, so not much interest in that one.

Episode 3 is my favorite, but obviously I love them all and don't find anything disappointing about it. I can understand being disappointed by the finale, but it works really well for me. Is Cranston your favorite TV performance?Yes.

I seem to be in the minority but Season 2 of Stranger Things doesn't work for me at all. The story is an unfocused mess imo. I also really dislike the new teen characters they added to the cast. I do like the first 3 episodes though, especially the stuff with Hopper and Eleven. Ghost in the Shell - 4/10 A soulless bore and laughably amatuerish. I am a fan of the anime version though which did everthing so much better imo. The House - 3.5/10 Distateful and unfunny Mercury Rising - 5.5/10 Actually saw this at the cinema back in 1998. Iron Man - 6.5/10 It's fine but I don't get the love at all. Dodgeball - 6.5/10 Love the characters and it's pretty funny but the story is just forgettable. Man on Fire - 7/10 I am a fan of the style and I find it to be quite powerful on an emotional level.

Student Bodies (1981) 7.5/10 - I thought this film is really ridiciously fun. I actually didn't realize it was kinda parody film until it showed the title in the beginning and then it claims 'Halloween' which means it takes place on 31, October, but then next says 'Friday the 13th' and last 'Jamie Lee Curtis' birthday'. And I was like what the fuck. It was really dumb, but yet, I had a fun watching it. I thought the kills are great, but seriously, students are being killed off because they're.. having sex? One of the funniest explanations why did they kill those students. It has many hilarious lines and the funniest one from a movie is "I'm doing what my mommy told me not to do!" lol. I thought it was great, but the ending is kinda not good. It's not better than Scary Movie, but if you liked that film, you should definitely see it. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.
Children of the Corn (1984) 8/10 - For me it was a goosebumps film. It was fun, cheesy, ridiciosuly funny, pretty atmospheric and creepy film. The opening scene with the children killing their parents was really terrifying. I thought the children were great, especially the villain one.
Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice 7.5/10 - I saw it without checking out the rating. I was expecting it has between 4.8 and 5.1 rating, but it actually have 4.2/10. It was cheesy indeed, but however, it was really fun as the original with better and creepier kills. I also like the casting. It definitely deserves better rating.
Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest 7/10 - I expected maybe 4.1/10 and I was right. I was very excited to see because Charlize Theron is in it, since she was like 18 years old and it's her first film. She was in it for like 30 seconds lol, but to be honest, she looks so MUCH hotter now than she used to be from it. But however, it was still fun sequel. The ending is just ridiculously bad, crap special effects and monster, but I still enjoyed it.
Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering 6.5/10 - I was expecting 4.4 rating, but it has 4.3/10. I was surprised that Naomi Watts plays a main character in it, but she was good as usual. It was less cheesy and more well done than previous sequels. It was still mildly solid, but nothing special.
I'm still counting with the series.
The Disaster Artist (2017) 10/10 - Haha, what an excellent comedy/drama film. I laughed and cired, James Franco was incredibly good. I also liked Dave's performance and the whole casting. James Franco not being nominated an Oscar is a shame.
