Richard Jaeckel (or "Jake" as he was known among friends) was a familiar face to everyone who watches movies. Because of his intense looks, he played many tough guys over the years, some good, some bad, usually dying on screen by the end of the movie. He was the Sean Bean of on-screen deaths before Sean Bean! He was before my time, somewhat, so I'm not entirely certain if he was just a popular supporting actor or considered an actual star in his own right. But he worked a lot and with some of the best, crossing back and forth between movies and TV. He appeared in Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and Chisum (1970) with John Wayne, Come Back, Little Sheba (1952) with Burt Lancaster, 3:10 To Yuma (1957) with Glenn Ford, Flaming Star (1960) with Elvis Presley, 4 For Texas (1963) with Frank Sinatra, The Dirty Dozen (1967) with Lee Marvin, Starman (1984) with Jeff Bridges and Black Moon Rising (1986) with Tommy Lee Jones. He was handpicked by Paul Newman himself to play his brother in Sometimes A Great Notion (1971), which earned Jaeckel his only Oscar nomination. He and Newman later reteamed for The Drowning Pool (1975). I first encountered Jaeckel in The Jaws of Death (1976). The year before I was too young to go see Jaws, but when this came to our local theatre, I hounded my mom until she took me to see this. I later repaid her kindness by keeping her awake all night with my shark nightmares. And then he was in Grizzly (1976), he was suddenly the king of animal attack movies. He later did Day of the Animals (1977), which I never did get to see...yet. He was a regular on the early seasons of Baywatch, which started out as an okay show, not the cheesefest it became. Jaeckel was discovered while working as a mailboy at 20th Century Fox, even though he never considered becoming an actor, he accepted his first movie role, and his career was off and running. If you don't recognize him, then you haven't watched enough movies yet. All the Richard Jaeckel movies I've seen to date: Sands of Iwo Jima 3:10 To Yuma Flaming Star The Dirty Dozen Sometimes a Great Notion Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid The Outfit Walking Tall Part II Grizzly The Jaws of Death The Dark Herbie Goes Bananas Airplane II: The Sequel Starman Black Moon Rising

Certainly a welcome face in film. Jaeckel played a GI in Guadalcanal Diary before entering the service (Merchant Marine?). And of course his character in a later film coins the term "dirty dozen".

This was my first notice of Jaeckel many years ago as the "young punk" who challenges Peck's Johnny Ringo ("He don't look so tough") in the opening scene resulting in the pursuit of Ringo by Jaeckel's brothers.

Seemed like he took over for Nick Adams in the B movie circuit. THE GREEN SLIME--I imagine Nick Adams could have done the role that Jaeckel had.
Then he did some forgotten obscurities like CHOSEN SURVIVORS.
GRIZZLY I saw in a drive-in--I probably saw THE JAWS OF DEATH too. I think I need to check out the latter again.

"Excellent. Thanks. I see it is JIMMY Ringo, not Johnny as I typed."
A natural mistake, Mike -- I've often made it myself.
By-the-bye, John Ireland did play a 'Johnny Ringo' in GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL
There was a real gunfighter by that name (1844-1882), who did run with the Clantons. He was well educated, and was fond of quoting Greek.

Great character actor who had many, many, MANY memorable roles. He was also a regular on the TV series "Spenser for Hire" in the 80's. "Mako the Jaws of Death" was shown on Commander USA's groovy movies with hilarious results.

He was in so many great pictures playing amazing characters. It was always rather surprising to find him as the bad guy with his big puppy dog eyes and boy next door blond good looks. Believably bad or good. Long career and a good one. Thanks for the thread ! Lebowskidoo 🦞

That must be it. I saw "OK Corral" just about two months ago and reviewed it for the weekly thread. The name must have stuck in my head. Thanks again.

He had a very lengthy career and did not seem to age very much through most of it.

Jaeckel had a guest star role in one of my top three favorite TV series, “Mission: Impossible.” In the 6th season story, “Run For The Money” (first broadcast on December 11, 1971), Jaeckel plays a mob enforcer who, as the result of the M:I flim-flam, is taken for a ride by his former colleagues. I couldn’t find a photo illustration from this show.
