Revisiting the 'Battlestar Galactica' series recently, I was struck by the performance of Dorothy Lyman as Socrata, Kara Thrace's abusive yet fiercely proud mother who believed that her method of "tough love" was ultimately benefiting her daughter. Are there any brief (one or two episode) guest star performances that you find particularly memorable?

Usually the first one which springs to my mind is Jeremy Renner as Penn in the Season 1 episode ‘Somnabulist’ of the TV series Angel. Also memorable... David Bradley in The Tudors episode ‘Problems in the Reformation’. John Hurt in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special ‘The Day of the Doctor’.

Two in the same episode of GUNSMOKE, an episode called "Cowtown Hustler", made in the "nonviolent" era that followed a flurry of anti violence misdirected at the blood instead of the reason for blood.
This episode had two actors in memorable roles: Jack Albertson and John Davis Chandler as pool pros. The first was a washed up old guy and the second was the young punk.
Albertson was cool throughout, but Chandler was a real punk who made a great revelation at the end, when two characters turned about and we saw their real motivations. In the end, Chandler turned out cool in this role.

I would add John Ritter as Ted on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The John Ritter guest performance I remember best was him as a fire and brimstone preacher on "The Waltons."

Leonard Nimoy as Dr. Barry Mayfield, “A Stitch in Crime” (Columbo). Brilliant performance, but there are so many great Columbo one-off performances.
Probably many more in the TV shows that don’t follow an overarching narrative—Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, etc.

I remember great guest appearances by John Ritter on The Bob Newhart Show, Phyllis and Doc. But my favorite guest character was John Larroquette's 6 appearances om The Practice as Joey Heric. Larroquette wound up on Boston Legal, but not as Joey Heric.

Phillip Baker Hall as the library cop ... on Seinfeld One of the funniest scenes in TV history. And critically, that is one of the lower rated episodes. They should have let Hall go off in the finale.

Phillip Baker Hall as the library cop and Larry Thomas as the Soup Nazi in Seinfeld Donald Pleasance as the wine loving killer in Columbo Yes! Donald Pleasance was so good as Adrian Carsini in that Columbo episode. And I liked the fact that Columbo seemed to really like him. I was going to mention a few other great guest-star appearances from this super classy, entertaining tv show from the 1970s. Lee Grant - episode "Requiem for a Dream" Robert Culp - "Death Lends a Hand" Leonard Nimoy - "A Stitch in Crime" Nicol Williamson - "How To Dial a Murder" Susan Clark - "Lady in Waiting" (my favorite episode) and my personal favorite choice (and I'm not the only one who thinks so, I know it!)... Ruth Gordon as super likeable murderesss, Abigail Mitchell in "Try and Catch Me" What a real treat that episode was!!! Oh, and I cannot forget to include Vera Miles in "Lovely, but Lethal". I never knew Vera Miles could be so FUNNY, but she had me in stitches in this one. Her beauty obsessed narcissist is something to see!
