Wow that is a douche move on his part. I wonder what would happen today if a critic blatantly did something like that? I could see lawsuits happening.

I remember those days when Siskel and Ebert were completely appalled by the slasher genre, but that boycott crap went a bit too far. And it didn't do any good anyway because Paramount just kept on grinding out the Friday sequels year after year.

So he didn't quite give out Betsy's address like people claim.
This is definitely amusing in hindsight. Here we are in #metoo, and there he's calling Cunningham "one of the most despicable creatures to ever infest the film business" because of some corn syrup. Right.
I think his actual review, when he stops playing moral guardian to actually give one, is dead on. Friday 1 sucked. Wouldn't have given out the ending myself, but then again, it doesn't really matter since the "twist" had no setup.

I think he was kinder to Jaws: The Revenge.

Gene didn't like Part VI or V either, but Roger Ebert really, really, REALLY HATED THEM!!!

It's a damn shame he died before the likes of Saw, Human Centipede, and all the other torture-porn flicks became a thing.

And it didn't do any good anyway because Paramount just kept on grinding out the Friday sequels year after year. I remember seeing their review on the original Halloween and they were all about it giving accolades and what not. I prefer Halloween, but in my opinion Friday the 13th isn't that bad. I actually prefer it as a series. Neither series is anything to write home about, but Friday is much more consistent.

I am pretty sure. Though it is pretty mild compared to some Mexican/Filipino shot ones.

Seems like Siskel is reviewing the film as if it's a potential classic of cinema history. 'Friday the 13th' is what it is and doesn't pretend to be otherwise. Anyone knows what you're going into when you watch a film like 'Friday the 13th'.

I am pretty sure. Though it is pretty mild compared to some Mexican/Filipino shot ones. Found this in the IMDB trivia: If Savini was such a highly touted makeup effects artist, why didn't he make something up with latex?
Wasn't there laws against that kind of harming animals on films even then? I think 'Kingdom of the Spiders' squashed a few real live tarantulas.

I am surprised it wasn't covered since it was Paramount--but maybe the AHA didnt get active until after Heaven's Gate? Not sure--when the Hayes Code was dropped, animal cruelty went up.
Food of the Gods 1976 has the reputation for being one of the worst--but it was shot in Canada which had no animal cruelty laws (I dont think they adopted any since 2000 something after a century of no change and even now I think they drag their feet on it).

I'd say it's a good slasher with a memorable third act. Siskel was being a dick in ruining the twist.
The second film is, on the whole, a superior end product.
