Any forum that concerns film should have a thread concerning this classic masterpiece.
A modern retelling of the fall of babylon? a cautionary tale of the dependence/ dominance on/ of machines over the people who built them? Lets think it over while sipping our wine, made from the labors of those we never see.

well, there are several versions floating around, I have the "long cut" which features the original score & a lot more footage recovered over time. The shorter version i have is much shorter & has different music, that's the one widely available, like on youtube.
To be fair, it is a silent film made in the 1920's, & parts of the original film were lost or damaged due to circumstances in europe at the time. I guess silent film is not for everyone.

I saw the short version in a film class in the 70s. Loved it from the start.
Not really a fan of the restored version they show on TCM now and then. Maybe they could clean up the restored bits so they blend in better with the rest.

The restored scenes are taken from a paper copy of the original print, and they have vertical lines which mar the image.
It's quite jarring to me.

They created a paper copy of each frame, or so I heard. In looking for more info, I find no mention of that, so I might be misremembering. Anyway, here's a shot of what the restored footage looks like:

thank you for the explanation catman. the extended version also has parts where there is no footage )lost/ damaged), & captions explain what happened in the interim.

The challenge with buying a copy of Metropolis or seeing it on streaming, is that there are so many different versions. And some versions have lower quality or are not complete. * The version I recommend is called "The Complete Metropolis" which is 2 hours, 28 minutes long. That's over one hour longer than many other versions. This is what it looks like. www.amazon.com/Complete-Metropolis-Blu-ray-Brigitte-Helm/dp/B0040QYROK?camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=ur2&tag=ipad0e2e-20&linkId=OMBRYAX56M45VB35- Missing scenes; For instance I do not recommend the Giorgio Moroder version. It is only 1 hour, 23 minutes long. There are many other shorter versions like this which don't have huge parts of the movie. - Musical score; this is also very important. The original score by Gottfried Huppertz for the film has been found and that music is quite spectacular. "The Complete Metropolis" has the original music. Unfortunately many versions of the film have modern music such as from Giorgio Moroder or from other composers which in my opinion is not nearly as good. BB ;-)

Maybe they could clean up the restored bits so they blend in better with the rest. The problem with perfectly restoring all the new found footage is that it would cost a lot of money to clean up each frame digitally. That could run over $1 million in labor costs. (Maybe someday that will happen.) So, with "The Complete Metropolis" we are stuck with some poor quality images while at the same time we get the complete story in the film. What we also get with the complete version is the original music which is amazing. It's at the level of a John Williams score in my opinion. BB ;-)

I started the version that's on youtube with an alternate soundtrack. Got very bored the first hour, mainly because the music distracted me. So after little over an hour I muted it and put on my Swans - The Glowing Man cd and had such an amazing experience watching it. It fitted perfectly with the atmosphere, things somehow matched up perfectly and everything felt so exciting. Great movie when watched with the right music playing.

Thats a very good idead, actually.
I sometimes play cartoons with the sound down & play drum & bass/ jungle/ trance music & it's really a trip what different music can do for a film.

I loved that movie, but yes it is long. I got it on a 3 pack of silent horror movies, a cheap DVD, so the score music was lousy, but my mom and I watched it. Given it WAS so long, we'd watch 30-60 minutes at a time and come back to it each day until it was done. That's also how we got through Greed, and how I got through Star Wars.

A brilliant movie one of the best ever made. Probably the best silent movie ever made. And this movie to me is the quintessential PROOF that Hollywood has gone downhill on a rocket sled. People say 'movies TODAY are so much smarter than they used to be, the audiences are so much smarter'...no, just, NO. Look at this movie, made NINETY years ago, when there were NO computer effects, there were very limited special effects, and see what people were able to create back then.

Well i do agree that movies in the past was generally better than what they are today. And that the quality was better and has gone down in the last 10-15 years. But they do still make good movies. I think its important to remember that they made plenty of crappy movies in the past to. But they are forgotten. Also the reason i think that movies are no longer lets say original as they were in the past. Is simply because pretty much every type of storyline has been done. Its almost impossible to be original. I have not really though about movies today being smarter than movies in the past. I really don`t care about that or if people think they are smarter than the audience if the past. I do apologize for my crappy spelling and grammar.

How about this version ?? The music begins at about two minutes and 8 seconds. This is the original score which imo is excellent. BB ;-)

I really enjoy going back and watching the movie.
I bought Giorgio Moroder's restoration on iTunes and I don't like it's sped up. Also I remember some of the songs not really fitting the movie.

The real question is what's the best cut of Metropolis available today. I'm used to the one from the 1980s.

I think I found it with other languages 'closed captioned'. Definitely English.
