Where do you begin to talk about this movie? For this film alone, Fritz Lang enshrined himself in cinematic folklore forever. It's influence is everywhere, it transcends film communities, it's been an emblem of political movements, industrial movements, social movements. It's a masterpiece as you say, one of perhaps a dozen or more classics from the 1920s that shifted the accepted parameters of society forever, proving once and for all (within the filmic age) that great art will always possess the power to encourage, provoke or instigate radical social reform. Thank you for this exquisitely beautiful response, Petrolino. It's wise and wonderful. You're too kind. But thanks!

Hi, spiderwort, Aaah, yes... Betamax! I still have one or two Beta machines from the early '80s (a top-load Sony, with 'piano-key' type buttons on the front) and a late '80s front-load Sony SL-S2000, which sort-of still works - when it feels like it! With over 300 Beta tapes still in my possession, I occasionally pull one out for a bit of a retro-giggle. Some of the stuff recorded off tv channels back then is a real hoot these days..... I still have my copy of 'Metropolis' on Beta, but I converted it across to DVD about 10 years ago, in order to preserve the old tape, and make playing the movie back a bit less of a chore, as well as a strain on the tape, and the machine.... I would like to get the old Beta machines serviced, but I cannot seem to find anyone who is willing to take on the chore. A local repair shop bloke just laughed at me when I told him what I wanted. He said that 'the parts for those old dinosaurs rusted away and ran out about 30 years ago.' Oh, well................
