I forgot about this one for a while, but I just thought of it because of the score- the atypical drums throughout was very cool, and it’s too bad it wasn’t recognized for it at the oscars, because the score really fit the film and sounded totally unique.
Anyway! I think it’s a great character study, interestingly shot, a thoughtful and original take on the supers, the actors that play them and what befalls them, working on the stage, and is just all around kooky. I also love how Keaton’s role reembles his having been the Batman, and how Ed Norton is basically playing his famously dickish and hard-to-work-with self.
Thoughts?

I enjoyed it quite a bit in the theater, though I haven't had interest in watching it again. Keaton was great and yeah, I got a kick out of Norton essentially playing himself. The characters were all engaging and yet I can't help but feel the film itself wouldn't have been half as interesting without the gimmick of how it was shot.

It's a well crafted meditation on the unexpected virtue of ignorance; and a showcase for Keaton and Norton performances. I needed a second watch to appreciate the layers and English subtitles to fully understand the dialogue. 7.5/10

It’s okay. Didn’t love it as much as others did.

Birdman really is one of the best movies ever made, but not for obvious reasons, and that's what keep its from being one of the most popular movies ever made. The movie is a technical marvel and works on a meta level too. But it's not visceral enough, the way that The Revenant is. In the long run of Innaritu's movies, The Revenant will probably more well remembered.
If anyone's thinking about looking up Innaritus other works look up Amores Perros. Its in Spanish so you're lazy asses will have to read a little, but well worth the effort. 21 Grams and Babel are also well worth watching. You'll see the growth and evolution of this fine directors works.

The first time I tried watching it, I was not in the right headspace, and had to turn it off. The second time I was immersed in it and appreciated the nuance and quirky layers found within, though that time was enough for me. Now I really want to watch it again, especially with the idea of separating the artist from the art, the person from what he produces, in light of the current hot topic.
Also, thanks for all of the insight and honest opinions, guys! Super mellow thread, with comments following the thread topic involving users from all sides of the board- Great Stuff!

Excellent movie. I like it more than any MCU movie. Keaton should have won the Oscar.

With all this praise for it, nobody of the opposite opinion is going to speak up.

With all this praise for it, nobody of the opposite opinion is going to speak up. I don’t think anyone here is afraid to express a dissenting opinion. And they’re free to- it’s not easy to watch, it can be grating, the characters are rather annoying, it’s dark, if you’re not into the drums, they probably drive you mad....🤷♂️

It's a great movie and a very unique way to make a superhero movie.
There needs to be more non-property superhero films.

Very good film. Not great, not bad at all. Colour me guilty of loving its production & stage shot appeal. Story doesn't do much for me, the characters even less.
It's in my soon to watch dvd pile as we speak. I've ceased choosing what to watch on whims, I stack a pile every few weeks I'm in the mood for & if I don't get to them all, meh.

I went to see this film with two friends at a special free screening at my local public library after it won the Oscar. I did not enjoy it and somehow I knew my friends were not enjoying it. Later they both said to me, well with your experience on stage you must have understood it better than we did (I used to be a stage actor). All I could tell them was that I didn't get it. So now I am wondering what did I miss.

Whether you like the movie or not, you have to admit that it is one of the most well made movies, technically, of all time. The acting is almost unmatched in any film and the cinematography is brilliant. The rest of the movie is just okay, but those two things put this movie on another level.

I saw it once while recuperating from the wreck at home. I was on massive pain killers, antinemetics, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatories. I haven't rewatched it since. I know it was the cocktail I was on but the movie freaked me the fuck out. I don't remember large swaths of it but I just felt a general since of foreboding and anxiety while watching it. Again probably the meds.

When i watched it first time with friends at the cinema, we walked out after the first 20 minutes (moreso their decision than mine, they dont like indie films). I watched it fully when it came out on streaming and really enjoyed it. It is pretentious but theres a lot to like about Keatons struggles.
