In high school, I convinced two people in my class that due to intense solar flares the earth had been mildly pushed ahead in its orbit, such that the governments of the world had unanimously decided to bypass the following Tuesday in order to make up the difference. So the following week would be Monday - Wednesday - Thursday - Friday. I wondered how many people they asked if it was true before approaching me at the end of the day to tell me that it was bullshit.

I had a bunch of my younger workers convinced I serve in Vietnam. The limp, cane and scars came from "A VC mortar at Da Nang during Tet". I told the a few times how old I was but it took a long time to do the math (I was 10 when Saigon fell, six during Tet)

When I came back home after one year in Europe on an exchange program I told my kid brother that I had bought a gyrocopter over there but because it was so big I couldn't bring it with me, so I had it shipped, and it was going to be delivered any day. For weeks and months afterwards he would ask me "when is the gyrocopter going to get here?". But he was only nine years old, so I am not sure that counts.
On the other hand, when I was around 14 years old I had a classmate who loved making up crazy stories. One of them was that he had accidentally hacked into the Pentagon and was now worried that the police or the FBI or the CIA were going to come after him - pretty much the basic premise of WarGames, except the movie hadn't come out yet, so I don't know where he got the idea. I don't think I believed that one, but I did believe another tall story that he was telling around school: that during a family vacation to California a talent agent had noticed him and offered him a contract to star in an upcoming major science fiction blockbuster.

I have convinced many ‘foreigners’ of the dangers of the Australian bush/outback and it’s increasingly bizarre wildlife. I think the best I’ve done is convinced a friend from South Asia that in the bush, scorpions the size of chihuahuas exist. Others include Tassie devils can jump and attack your jugular, Australia has a spider (and a snake) that is fatally venomous and is colour changing camouflaged like a chameleon, land based octopuses, and a favourite of mine - eagle sized Magpies, capable of ripping an ear off.....

I have convinced many ‘foreigners’ of the dangers of the Australian bush/outback and it’s increasingly bizarre wildlife. I think the best I’ve done is convinced a friend from South Asia that in the bush, scorpions the size of chihuahuas exist. Others include Tassie devils can jump and attack your jugular, Australia has a spider (and a snake) that is fatally venomous and is colour changing camouflaged like a chameleon, land based octopuses, and a favourite of mine - eagle sized Magpies, capable of ripping an ear off..... I avoid Australia because I'm shite scared of drop bears and hoop snakes. |

I've definitely done the drop bear thing on a friend from India. We went to a camp site in the bush and I tried to scare him. Turns out he wasn't worried at all and confessed that when we camped out in the jungle in India a few years before it was crawling with Tigers and Elephants that really could have killed me and he hadn't told me about.
