Burt's recent passing took me by total surprise and made me realize how much I enjoyed some of his movies over the years. However, like I usually do when someone passes, I looked at their credits to see what I'd seen, what I hadn't seen and what I own. I was quite shocked that I only own Boogie Nights on DVD, and none of his other work! I recently found Meet Wally Sparks on VHS at a yard sale, and I once had a roommate years ago who went out and bought Without a Paddle (Burt HAD to have been cast because of Deliverance) and The Cannonball Run. Do any of you own any Burt movies at all? I sort of feel like this is the wrong place to ask, but then again, no one on FG really would remember him much either. Speaking of Boogie Nights, Burt hated working with Paul Thomas Anderson so much he vowed to never do so again. From what I can tell, Burt hated that PTA knew too much about film making and came across as a braggart, and he also talked over him during interviews for the movie. Maybe PTA was just more than a little excited, who knows. Burt fired his agent for getting him the movie, only it turned into the media darling it became. Burt has a long list of bad movies to his credit, but, in my opinion, this and Deliverance were his finest movies.

In my personal collection:
The two he did with Robert Aldrich, The Longest Yard 1974 and Hustle 1975.
Smokey and the Bandit 1977
The Cannonball Run 1981
City Heat 1984
and I think that's it.
Oh yes, Fuzz 1972 on video

Boogie Nights and Deliverance. Wouldn't mind having White Lightning. I like this shot from Boogie Nights. It suggests the film is not just about the porn biz; it's about the American public in the 70s.

100 Rifles - O.K. entertainment Deliverance - his best Lucky Lady - pretty poor Hustle - one of his better ones City Heat - pretty poor Switching Channels - O.K. The Player - excellent, but he's in it for about 30 seconds Boogie Nights - very good, 2nd best.

Amazingly, not as many as I should have. Kino Lorber has quite a few of his films on bluray now, it's worth a look. White Lightning and Gator among them. I believe Malone and the Crew as well. They just announced Stick, not sure when it will come out though.
My personal library:
Smokey and the Bandit - DVD Smokey and the Bandit II - DVD Smokey and the Bandit III (cameo) - DVD Hooper - Bluray Stroker Ace - DVD Cannonball Run - DVD The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - Bluray Boogie Nights - Bluray
As far as Boogie Nights go, and this a tangent, I sure wish the bluray release had stuck with the original theatrical poster. It totally captures the '70s vibe. The orange cover with the cartoon type characters is just so out of place in my opinion.

It suggests the film is not just about the porn biz; it's about the American public in the 70s. I always saw the porn aspect as secondary. The movie is about the characters, who are all "rejects" in some way. Together, they find acceptance, a family. It seemed so relatable, we all probably have felt rejected or different at some point in our lives.

I prefer the original poster too, but I'm also stuck with the cartoon cover. If someone didn't know better, they might wrongly assume it was a cartoon. Dumb!

I had Cannonball Run but donated it and didn't even re-wind it from its half watched state ! Have the early Longest Yard (still unseen) and The Player. I have some of the Evening Shade episodes on tape and some of the Quint appearances on Gunsmoke. Mostly... I have memories of him laughing his head off on various and sundry talk shows. BTW .. those drawings you posted on the sketches thread β¦ A+ ! Lebowskidoo π¦nice thread, this !

Re.. Shamus & semi-tough
Those tapes are long gone..I had a big purge 10 years ago. What an idiot I was. I chucked out and sold off several hundred tapes. Some regret there...actually, so, thanks for reminding me...not.

I've actually seen it around 1975 at my local cinama too, I think it was called something sloppy like "The Bone Crushing Gang" in Sweden (translated back to English). Interesting, in both Aldrich movies Burt's main antagonist was played by Eddie Albert.

Only THE PLAYER and EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX... neither of which are "Burt Reynolds movies"... but I'm going to splash out on STARTING OVER ... and maybe DELIVERANCE if I can get cheaply (My Dad asked if I had it so would be good to rewatch with him) ... and I feel a duty to finally watch SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT which I have hitherto avoided.
