Yes, but his career trajectory would have suffered.
The swashbuckler is the more memorable character in most movies.
Luke was too whiny. He even whined while being heroic.

You might as well be asking if he could put on blackface and make a good Lando Calrissian. Well?

(I’ve just seen Star Wars for the first time recently.) I do think he gave his best performance as Luke in RotJ, though.

Well, the blackface is obviously out, but other than that I think he would have made a great Lando, to be honest. But Billy Dee Williams was just plain cool. I thought the casting was pretty much spot-on in all of the original three movies.

He was written for a particular purpose and that was to be a Doubting Thomas hero until he could rise to the occasion. He did it 3 times in 3 movies It's the exact same role he played in TLJ, but all of a sudden that isn't his character. I digress...The fact that he is the main character of the story who has this trait about him isn't as memorable or fun as Han. He's definitely more necessary to that story than Han, but Han's personality is more necessary for other types of movies which helps the actor that portrays him.

If it was in 1966 and James Coburn was Obi Wan Kenobi, then maybe.

Well I was making a joke in reference to Dead Heat on a Merri Go-Round.
But then who would be Darth Vader?
Peter Lorre would be my choice for Yoda if he had lived a few more years.

I’d thought of him too, but Karloff’s voice, while creepy, wasn’t exactly imposing.

lowtacks86 —brilliant! The Star Wars with all three movies fit into a plot under two hours, 1966: Luke Skywalker: Harrison Ford Obi-Wan Kenobi: James Coburn Yoda: Peter Lorre Darth Vader: John Wayne/Orson Welles Princess Leia: ? Han Solo: Charlton Heston Lando Calrissian: Sammy Davis Jr. Grand Moff Tarkin: Charles Bronson This is fun.

Han Solo: Charlton Heston Lando Calrissian: Sammy Davis Jr. Grand Moff Tarkin: Charles Bronson The Emperor: Boris Karloff We still need to cast Leia. Anyone dislike my choice of Heston for Han?

I personally can’t see him play the role. I have to say no.

I could see Orson Welles as a humanoidish Jabba the Hutt (Orson Swelles may be the ultimate authority on that). Though Oscar Homolka could be another for it.
Roddy McDowall as the voice of C3P0 ?
