Karen Black yeah. What with the Rob Zombie movies now I'm beginning to think that woman is the greatest post-modern diva. Karen Black herself wasn't scary. It was the little fucker trying to get her that freaked me out!

I know this scene scared me as a kid, the first time I saw it: Vera Webster being turned into a mindless cyborg: "Arrrmmfph!" Superman III (1983)I think it scared most of us back then! I wish I knew how they did those Special Effects... Did you know there is a continuity error with this scene. Vera is wearing gloves. When she is transformed, the gloves are gone. When Vera is saved, she is wearing gloves again.

Even though I was in high school when this movie came out, I think it deserves an honorable mention: The Needle Coming For The Eye Scene: "Fire In The Sky" (1993) It still makes me uncomfortable every time I see the movie!

I wish I could post an image, but I don't know what ghost movie it was that I saw when I was a youngster.
After I had a melt down after seeing "Bambi" as a kid, my parents forbade me from watching upsetting or scary movies. But when I went over to a friend's house, she and her sister were watching a scary movie on TV. There was a dark old mansion on a cliff by the sea, ghosts hid behind the walls and if someone looked into a mirror, the ghosts would reach out and grab the person, dragging that person through the mirror into the wall. OMG!!!
I had a look at old IMDb, and I found three possibilities, "The Uninvited" 1945, being the most likely given the old house on the cliff. Or it could have been another old (even then) movie, an anthology of several ghost stories, can't recall the name, or "The Haunting" 1966. Hard to tell, given how few images were available on IMDb.
But I was an impressionable, sensitive kid, and when I grew up, realized that it was hindering me in living a normal life, so I started to work on that. I watched "The Exorcist" on TV one night, but had to keep switching channels to "The Sound of Music" on another station.
Eventually I got over the fear of the supernatural, fearing more the natural - bad humans - and took steps to ensure my safety - ADT, motion-activated lights, et al. I binge-watched crime procedurals, trying to figure out what made people good or bad. Behavioral analysis became an area of interest.
So nothing supernatural scares me now, just humans behaving badly!
Edit: Well, AND the IRS...

rachelcarson1953 I suggest that you post the description on I Need to Know... It's amazing, the things that get identified by that crew. Include the titles you've considered as possibles. That mirror thingy sounds familiar ! It would be great to get the movie identified.

There was a mirror in the movie that looked exactly like the one in our hallway; I snatched it off the wall and hid it in my closet!
