My older sister was so terrorized by the flying monkeys that she had to be removed from the theater. She still refuses to see The Wizard of OZ and avoids animated films (even tho' OZ was not animated ! )

This episode was the most memorable but the show in general was always so scary as a kid 😱

Karen Black yeah. What with the Rob Zombie movies now I'm beginning to think that woman is the greatest post-modern diva. Oh, Gameboy, I love me some Karen Black. She could make me laugh, cry and shudder. She was an excellent actress and very under-appreciated. I just watched "The Pyx" last night. She was cool, spooky irony personified. Ahhh, the depths...

Three things offhand: 1. I read just about everything I could get my hands on as a kid, but I loved reading about monsters, ghosts, the paranormal, and unsolved mysteries. (Wait a moment—I still do!) There was one book I read on aliens that scared the bejesus out of me—someone recounted an incident in which she was paralyzed while in bed in the middle of the night, and she saw three figures at the foot of her bed: an old man with a moustache, a beautiful young woman with long hair, and a small troll-like monster. They just stared at her, stared and stared, and they did so every night, no matter where she slept. I can’t exactly remember the details of what happened—an abduction and experimentation, probably—but dear God seeing those three terrified me every night before I went to bed. Dear God. Probably doesn’t sound so scary now, but it really bothered me. It bothered me so much that I asked my mother to remove the book from the house, before I took it back to the library, so that I wouldn’t be with it in the house. 2. I suffered from night-terrors like mad, and one time my brain was filled with bright lights and colors and sounds like a psychedelic trip or something, only with everything coming at me. I remember screaming for my mother, she ran in, and I was raving about “numbers” coming to get me. I still don’t understand what I meant by that, or what exactly I was seeing. I never had a night-terror that bad again. Probably connected to why I was so scared of the three figures in #1 and the paralysis. 3. Much lighter note. My crazy, garlic-loving, coin-saving uncle decided to dress like a clown for my cousin’s (his daughter’s) third birthday. Unfortunately, my cousin’s birthday is in the middle of August, so when he came the make-up was dripping off his face like the wax from a candle. Freaked little me out, because I thought his face was melting off! Definitely contributed to my—not so much fear as much as severe dislike of clowns!

Maybe some of this would account for your spooky (but very, very cool) avatar. I love it. Thank you very much—I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the new avatar, and I really appreciate all of them. It’s from the Sleepy Hollow segment of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (’49), which is still a great movie to watch around this time of the year. I have a conflicted relationship with spooky stuff. I love the atmosphere and all that, but I’m also pretty much a wimp. The recent movie The Nun, which everyone here didn’t find scary, scared me. (I really liked it, though.) I always go first in haunted-houses so that I can see and mentally register all the actors before they jump out at me. Yet I still go to ‘em. Who knows why? More for the shrink’s couch!

I thought his face was melting off! Uncle Save-a-Coin, you old rapscallion you! For some reason, despite my wimpiness, that never scared me (nor anything in Temple of Doom). I always thought it was cool.

NalkarjWhat about the face peeling off into the sink in Poltergeist ? I won't post it because it still creeps me out and I saw it when a non-kid !... BUT one of these jokers no doubt will, just because !

BUT one of these jokers no doubt will, just because ! Yes, that scared me! Though on the whole I didn’t find much besides that and the clown all that scary in that one. I’d already developed a weird phobia about looking into mirrors long before that, though. I had a lot of weird phobias as a kid.

More for the shrink’s couch! Ha! Well, I certainly can relate to that. It is definitely why I just adore William Castle movies, because they are so atmospheric, but completely cozy and non-threatening. Mr. Castle is the Agatha Christie of horror films. For example, I cannot watch the "Saw" movies at all because they are just too much for me. Ditto "Hostel" or just about anything that comes out today. (Though I can't wait to see the new "Halloween", though that is only because of JLC return as Laurie Strode.) I don't even want to watch "American Horror Story". The most intense director I can enjoy is Dario Argento. But he was in a class all by himself. His murder set pieces are like gorgeous nightmares. In his prime, he could do some really breathtaking stuff.

Nalkarj and the coolest uncle in all the world ! This be true! Have I told the story about when it was in the middle of the summer and he suddenly decides to put a tape in the stereo of all Christmas music and turn the volume all the way up with the windows down? Or the time when we were out at Montauk and he accidentally ran over the front-gate with his truck? Or his obsession with building a wine-cellar in the basement that I lovingly call “the bunker”? He’s a great guy.

Which stinks when people tell me how good they are (except Hostel), etc., etc., and I have to make up excuses or be honest and say I’m a wimp! Anything with gore turns me off. It’s not terror, it’s not even horror, it’s just revulsion. How superior is the Hitchcockian approach of showing nothing and letting the mind play tricks. (Though I’m also looking forward to this new Halloween, by the way.) I should probably take a look at more Argento stuff. I’ve seen a lot of Bava, whose work I really enjoy.
