Where you live. Kids get dressed up and go door to door with a bag for candy? When I was a kid I loved to do that. When I got older I liked to pass out candy to the kids that came to my door. Many years ago they stopped letting kids do that where I live. They would have a party for the kids at the local fire-hall. But after a couple years they even stopped doing that. How about where you live?

How about where you live? My town does two seperate things. The Friday before Halloween they do a downtown trick or treat where kids can go downtown and all the businesses hand out candy. Then the Sunday before Halloween we have a trick or treat day where kids can go door to door. Both of these events are done during daylight hours and sort of kill the Halloween vibe in my opinion. I don't have kids, so maybe if I did my opinion would be different, but I remember growing up in the 80s we had trick or treat on Halloween night when it was dark. I remember going out and there were tons of people. Now there are very few. Nobody even comes to my neighborhood. I lived in this neighborhood when I was a kid and it was full then. I don't know if its the fact that they do it during daylight hours, if kids now a days just don't care about it, or if its a little bit of both, but it looks like trick or treating, in my town anyways, is nowhere near what it was 30+ years ago.

It does not allow kids to go door to door. Not even a party for the kids anymore. As a kid I would plan out my route I would take on Halloween so I could get the most candy. Then the next day me and my brother would trade candy.

Was it a safety thing?

Where I grew up, trick or treat was a major event. All little kids went with an adult at a discrete distance, and older kids as a group.
My dad was a major trickster; he strung a cable from our chimney down to a tree at the base of the driveway, and when a bunch of kids approached, he'd let loose a bedsheet ghost on a pulley that would glide down the cable. One mother came up to tell us, trying not to laugh, that her little boy had wet himself and wouldn't walk up the driveway! Dad stopped doing it after that.
Nowadays, a lot of churches do a 'trunk or treat', whatever that is, but I live out in the sticks, and no one has ever come to my door on Halloween. Probably best, my goats might scare them!

It seems weird to me that there are areas where kids don’t go trick-or-treating, or only go with a particular group or in a mall. It seems shocking that it’s banned in some places.
All the kids in the neighborhood have gone trick-or-treating in every place I’ve ever lived.

And yes, I've seen too many episodes of "Criminal Minds" on TV...

But I’ve always seen kids going around with other kids—admittedly, perhaps, with the parents following behind. But never have I seen trick-or-treating stop in its entirety.

Where I grew up, at the time, was a kid-friendly neighborhood, but of late it's aged and I don't think there are enough kids to make the residents do anything special. My favorite Halloween costume was Zorro! (I not-so-secretly wanted a horse just like his!) Since my birthday is close to Halloween, the two events sort of morphed, and after age 4, I don't remember any birthday parties. My adult friends have always remarked, "Well, THAT explains a lot!"

We have trick or treating, but it is a little different. Cars from the poor neighborhood line the streets driving like a slow parade as their kids run from door to car to door to car. I don’t mind that they are from the poor neighborhood and some parents actually walk with their kids and try to be polite and make their kids act polite, but not the majority. Driving down the street yelling “you got candy?” Out the car window shouldn’t count as taking your kids trick or treating. And if the kids are 16 with no costume s and just hold out a bag, give you a dirty look and don’t say anything, that shouldn’t count either.

I still see some kids in the neighborhood going door-to-door but not as much as when I was a kid. Haven't had any kids come to my door in a couple of years although I do buy candy every year just in case. Before I started working from home, my co-workers would bring their kids into the office and they would go from cubicle to cubicle.

But never have I seen trick-or-treating stop in its entirety. It did where I live. But parents around here that want their kids to experience the fun of Trick or Treating will drive them to a nearby city that still does Trick or Treating. Or they take them to a relatives place and they do it there.

Still the same as ever here. Usually all the action takes place between 5-8. I live in a small village just outside a big city, we usually average around 40 kids.
A big difference from my hometown where I grew up. I'd be out stocking up with every other kid in town, while back at home, my dad would be sent out to buy more candy repeatedly because of the constant hordes.

Yes, My neighborhood still supports door-to-door trick-or-treating...
But I don't participate... The little monsters in my neighborhood are monsters every day of the year, constantly screaming (yes, screaming) and committing crimes, because the parents don't give a shit about parenting their kids... and I don't believe they deserve to be rewarded with candy for their constant bad behavior.
If things were different...
I might consider handing out money to those that worry about getting poisoned treats. I got money a couple of times as a kid, and it allowed me to buy the candy that I wanted to eat.
