Memorable on screen clergy, missionaries, nuns, evangelists, saints etc. As always essays, comments, and labeled images are welcome and encouraged. (and a tip of the hat thank you to petrolino … as this is a spin off from his actors who are real life ministers thread ) ELMER GANTRY (1960)A fast-talking traveling salesman with a charming, loquacious manner convinces a sincere evangelist that he can be an effective preacher for her cause. www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi862455065?playlistId=tt0053793&ref_=tt_ov_viBurt at his scenery chewing best plus great music ! Sweet Shirley Jones being a bad girl and Jean Simmons as always convincing and beautiful. Fantastic supporting cast !

Holy thread topic, BATouttaheck ! The Miracle Woman (1931) In this early Frank Capra-Barbara Stanwyck collaboration, she's the daughter of a local minister who, disgusted by the hypocrisy of his congregation, renounces the parish after his death and is approached by promoter Sam Hardy (pictured above with Stanwyck) with a plan to turn religion into some hard cash. Thematically similar to Elmer Gantry, it even culminates with a climactic fire, and like Sinclair Lewis's novel (and based on a Broadway play of the same year), it takes a timely and cynical look at Aimee Semple McPherson-style evangelism. Stanwyck's is an extremely effective performance, and even the sometimes-wooden David Manners ups his game here as a blind former aviator whose sightlessness takes in more than she does. With a script by Jo Swerling and ranging from touching to sordid to electrifying, it displays assured work from all involved. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? As family friend Monsignor Michael Ryan, Cecil Kellaway is buoyant at the news of Spencer Tracy's and Katherine Hepburn's daughter's marriage to accomplished and notable physician Sidney Poitier, and puzzled by Tracy's reflexive resistance to an African American son-in-law, mischievously needling his old friend: "That's very interesting, indeed. And rather amusing, too, to see a broken-down old phony liberal come face-to-face with his principles. Of course, I've always believed that under that fighting liberal facade, there must be some sort of reactionary bigot trying to get out."

Preacher men who are of no help whatsoever. Richard Burton is a defrocked minister in “Night Of The Iguana.” The minister in “High Noon” is pretty ineffectual As is Vaughn Taylor in “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” (1958) (relabeled a “Deacon” for the movie).

INHERIT THE WIND Rev. Jeremiah Brown (Claude Akins) Rev. Jeremiah Brown : [preaching] Oh, Lord of the tempest and the thunder, strike down this sinner, as thou did thine enemies of old in the days of the Pharaohs! Let him know the terror of thy sword! Let his soul, for all eternity, writhe in anguish and damnation! Rachel Brown : No! No, Pa! Don't pray to destroy Bert! Rev. Jeremiah Brown : Lord! We ask this same curse for those who ask grace for this sinner! Though they be blood of my blood and flesh of my FLESH!

Do fake priests count? Bogie in THE LEFT HAND OF GOD Harvey in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE dunno why they wouldn't... At a Catholic mission in China, long-awaited "Father O'Shea" proves to be a tough guy, disturbingly attractive to mission nurse Anne.
