I've only seen it on TV and everytime I watch it looks like a cartoon. Is it supposed to look like one or is it supposed to look as real as the world does? What kind of look was James going for?

It IS a cartoon.
All CGI is.

I saw it in 3D and the 3D actually looked pretty good. I mean I think the movie can work fine without it, but having it in 3D worked (though I know the movie was shot to be shown as 3D).

I thought it looked amazing, but then I think a lot of cartoons look amazing.
I think it looks best on Blu-Ray, but it was one of the few good looking 3D movies out there.

You know the sequels will be in 3D even though 3D didn't really catch on well after the first Avatar film.

it was made for 3-D, the 3-D covered up the CG. Without it it looks silly and flat, which it always was.

It has amazing 3D effects that make you feel like you're actually in a crappy cartoon.

at home i thought it looked terrible like bad cgi smurfs. but at cinema it impressed me as i forget about the cgi, i hate cgi. Can't say the same about Ready Player One. I think Avatar is why cinema blockbuster events exist, at home you totally lose out on the experience.

From what I can tell... it seems like it was a movie that did 3D well from what I have heard.
but at the end of the day the movie is forgettable.
NOTE: I have only seen it in 2D but I seriously doubt my overall opinion of the movie would change much had I seen it in 3D. for the record... I never viewed a movie in 3D before. but the way I see it... if a movie does not work in 2D, it ultimately fails.

No....
I remember first seeing it at home, renting it and left thinking it was good, but then they had an extended edition of the film they were releasing in theaters....and well....I thought I may as well check out what the 3D fuss was all about.....and I thought the 3d did nothing, and I even came out disliking the movie.

Yes. Saw it in IMAX 3D and thought 3D was a legit new takeover for cinemas. Turns out it was the only 3D movie done right.
I thought I was in the movie. It was amazing.

I saw it in theaters, in 3D, and I still can’t really tell ya. I remember the funeral-esque scene for Sigourney Weaver looked nice (I also kept wondering what Sigourney Weaver was doing in this). And I do remember I was really bored by it.

I thought it was amazing on the big screen in 3D.

Back in 2009, Avatar was the coolest experience i've ever had on big screen.

Overall, the movie was sort of forgettable to me.
But the theatrical experience...saw it in IMAX 3D. It was incredible.
Have yet to re-visit it. Didn't hate it, but the viewing experience trumped the quality of the story/movie for me.

it was made for 3-D, the 3-D covered up the CG. Without it it looks silly and flat, which it always was. This is incorrect. Nothing that has been made in 3D is better because of it. Avatar was one of the extremely few movies, along with Tintin & Gravity that looked good in 3D, but only at the expense of greatly reducing the 3D effect. What Avatar benefits from is a screen that can handle the visuals which is why BluRay is the best way to see it.

I dunno, but with all the CGI it's gonna age like milk (remember how good people thought the first Tron film looked like when it came out?)
