For anyone who might not be aware, a reboot of the Child’s Play film series is scheduled to be released on the same day as Toy Story 4. Here’s the link for those who are interested.
My biggest question from all of this is to ask, what’s the deal? What exactly is it that ever made these movies as popular as they are? Personally, I think they’re pretty annoying to sit through. A doll that weights no more than two pounds is not a particularly menacing basis for a slasher villain, and I frankly think that Chucky is pretty annoying as a character. I don’t find him scary or cool, and I always get frustrated at what a bunch of idiots the people in these movies usually are. Seriously, why is Chucky such an iconic slasher villain? |

Chucky is one of the most memorable, menacing and entertaining villains in the horror genre, that's why.
The design of the doll and Brad Douriff's fantastic voice-work are the main reasons. The movies are silly, but that is why people enjoy them.
The concept is ridiculous, but that is why it is fun.
I almost always get bored of these franchises after the first movies. Good and fun idea for a horror movie, but an idea that only works once.

1. As mentioned above, Brad Dourif's voice work is a delight. Chucky is an undeniably charismatic slasher villain.
2. The concept of a killer doll hunting down a young child is quite creepy and the early movies handle the subject matter well.
3. The first film actually felt like a psychological horror before Chucky's big reveal. It was shot so that it seems as though Andy (the kid) may in fact be the one responsible for all the mayhem. It's a clever film.
4. The final acts of the first two films (but esp. the second) are intense and exciting.
Everything after the first 2 is disappointing, however, as the series adopts a more comedic sensibility.

Chucky doesn't barrel into house parties hacking up teenagers. No one around him expects or believes him to be alive, and he catches them offguard. That's why he's scary. Or was scary. The movies haven't taken themselves particularly seriously in almost 30 years.

I like the entire series. they are better than most horror films for sure in my mind.

Chucky is an absolute delight, and the movies don’t take themselves too seriously, but when the humour balanced with horror is done right, it’s great.

Chuck & Co are just fun. Some movies are better than others.
But the concept and execution is as hillarious as it is horrific.

when it comes to horror ive always been more terrified of dolls than a zombie invasion. my grandma had two dolls a friend of hers gave her that she kept in her room. then after my Grandmother passed away last year we threw them away there was just something uneasy about keeping those dolls in her room after she had passed.
Rats are also a big no no for me when it comes to horror movies ive only seen Willard once im 26 years old (soon to be 27 this December) and whenever I see a rat scurry across the floor I cringe

Because Douriff is amazing in the roll and the doll always looked cool. The first one is a classic and done very well. The 2nd one was almost as good and had a better final act. The third one was a little silly, but still well done and fun to watch. It got a little crazy after that, but I did enjoy the new ones.

I've never been a fan. I've only seen the first one. Thought it was more silly than scary.
Not a terrible film. But not one I would watch again.

Because most of us had dolls when we were little-some still do but that's belongs in another category.
The idea that your doll comes to life, & is psychotic, & humorous is wild. That being said I only like the 1st one.

In its day, the film was technically impressive when the doll comes to life. A memorable malevolent monster. Tom Holland - fright night a few years earlier - directs with an entertaining sense of humor.

I have only watched the first 10-15 minutes of the first film, and it seemed really silly. I suppose it was one of those "horror" films that are geared toward teenagers.

The 1st one was interesting because it played with the idea that the most innocent of things could be the most deadly, a child's toy. The sequel played similarly because people weren't tired of it yet. But by the 3rd it played itself out.
Some producer always comes along and thinks they can take a dead brand and bring it back, to capitalize. I'll bet if this property were to go away NO ONE would miss it or ask for it to come back.
