Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One was whitewashing

So I assume you also hated Idris Elba as Heimdall, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman?

Yet you don't claim it was racist when they were cast. Why the double standard with Tilda Swinton?

Kelly Marie Tran as The Ancient One? Dude she would have performed badly and guys like you would have sent her death threats!

I think that's the Juxtaposition he is trying to convey. He was called a racist yesterday or today, specifically about  Kelly Marie Tran.

They didn't make her Asian for a few reasons:



1. They were able to grab Tilda Swinton. An A class actress.



2 The insulting trope of The Asian Grand master training the White Person.

Those types of Tropes became common place in the 50's-70's. Marvel Studios and Fiege didn't want to open that can of worms if they didn't have too. So If the Ancient One was casts by a Asian Actor the hardcore Comic Nerds would be happy, but Asians would be pissed. <sarcasm> 'Oh look there is a White Boy. We need to train him so he can help us poor worthless minorities. We will all train him to be our Savior." </sarcasm> They were stuck between a rock an a hard place.

3. One of the reasons is of course a business one. If you put an Asian actor as the Ancient One Tibetan Master the Chinese Government and people would get furious. Projecting an Tibetan Master in Power no matter how little would piss off China. Tibet is a sore spot for them. So why would we care about China's Box office. It's not just this movie. The Government of China only allows certian number of Western Civ's Movies in. If Marvel Studios insulted them they lost all future openings/earnings there. People like to think that this Medium is just pure art. It's not though. There is a business side to everything. If they piss off China and get shut down. That could lead to another failure, and another until you go broke. You can't make the art unless you can guarantee the money. It's shrewd, I know, but every major studio has to do it.The number of Slots for foreign in China is extreme low, so every studio tries to play nice with China to get that spot. It's no different that the shit our government lets China get away with, just because we want to keep China in the Number 1 trading Status.





Marvel Studiois believed they couldn't cast an Asian person in the movie as the Ancient One. This forced them to be creative. So the made her Celtic and and that the Ancient One is a title past down from the last. And casting her was a brilliant move. She's a great Actress, She has that other worldly Quality that fits well with the story. Again we got Tilda Swinton to play a part in an MCU movie. If you are into awards and shit she's has a shit ton of nominations and won a BAFTA and an Oscar; Nabbing her for the part was brilliant.





Marvel Studios navigated a mine field pretty easily. Not everyone was happy but not many were hatting. That's what a compromise is. Neither side is completely happy, but also they aren't completely pissed.



Marvel kept China happy with the Ancient One with Tilda, but not completely though. The didn't like the Tibetan Scenes showing how independent they were, and that there is a great power in Tibet defending it.



Comic Book Purist were pissed when they "White Washed + Va-JJ Scrubbed" What is the term for women taking over a male role? They also got a good movie, that had some hiccups true, but everything else was spot on. Most purist I know gave up the hate for Tilda after about 30m into the movie.



The General Public probably got the easiest. They didn't know the Ancient One was supposed to be Tibetan and Male in the first place. It's not like Doctor Strange had a lot of Mainstream Pop Culture exposure.



In the end they did the best they could with the situation. And turned it around. Remember Comic Book Readers and their secondary friends that don't like to read comics but loves moves and tv shows? That isn't the people you are targeting. You still target that demo some, but it's less of a priority. Marvel Studios needs to get Average Joe to come see it. The Guy whose never read a comic, maybe saw some cartoon growing up, and maybe saw a 2 or 3 MCU movies. That's the guy and the million others like him that Marvel Studios needs to get to the theater, That's the profit right there. . It's a balancing act between the Comic Readers fan service, making the general pop happy mostly, and continue making money and rising in power. Money is the one thing that will give you more creative licence and freedom to do what you want.

You talking about the Trevor twist or the fact that Ben Kingsly played an Asian?

Culturally/by Birth he's British.  Racially by United States Census Standards he is of Mix back ground. His dad was Gujarati Indian, but was a Kenyan. His mom was English decent. Now Asian is a racial category not a geographic one.  People from India are considered Asian. So are people from China and everywhere between the two.  Culturally and Ethnically China and India are wildly different. That's the only bone I can throw to Trevor in IM3 that both Chinese and Indian are Asian. 

Ironman3 was in the same boat as Doctor Strange when using the Mandarin which now has connotation of at least derogatory, at worst pejorative/slur. There was no chance in hell Marvel was going to put a Asian Actor that is  Ethnically Chinese as the Mandarin.  I'm surprised there wasn't a bigger backlash at using the character at all. 

If were me no chance in hell I'm using the Mandarin. It's just a mine field you have walk through.
