You were just correct but now you messed it up. Gremlins is for sure a Christmas horror movie bro. Have you even seen it? Them Gremlins wasn't playing around. They killed that old lady and a bunch of folks..........at Christmas. Plus, there's that horrifying story that Phoebe Cates tells about her dad trying to play Santa. That's truly awful and pretty Christmas specific.

Tough call on Gremlins. I've never thought of it as a 'Christmas movie,' but Christmas plays heavily into the events of the film. Doesn't Billy gets Gizmo as a Christmas present? I'm going to have to say Gremlins is a Christmas movie despite its release date in June. The season is as essential to the story as the monsters. Gremlins might be the exception that proves the rule in the Christmas movie debate.

There's probably an interesting story behind why they released it in June as opposed to the holidays. If it came out today it would definitely be released in November/December.

Sounds like it was after Memorial Day and before 4th of July though. Was 'Ghostbusters' around the same time of year? One would think Halloween time may be best to capitalize; however if once goes for the 'Summer Blockbuster' theory - I'm guessing it may have been then. Being horror dork - it always irked me when the F13th, Halloweens, Nightmare on Elm Streets were released in theaters nowhere near Halloween.

But goofy little critters, Gizmo in particular, seem perfect fodder for Holiday marketing. I guess it's a tough sell in general because who is the target demographic? It's a dark flick to be aimed at small children, but Gizmo is a little too cute to pull in teenagers and general horror fans. I still think if it came out today they'd drop it in the holiday season for sure.

Unless it's the Halloween franchise, horror doesn't need to be attached to Halloween. Horror movies come out all the time. There's one coming out this week.

I've seen less and less Horror movies in the theaters over the years - especially coming out non-Halloween season. Or would the smart move by a marketer/sales team/distributor be to be put that movie out around Halloween - like the recent Halloween which reached #1 in box office for that present week.

Wouldn't you have to give Friday the 13th a pass? They always take place in the summer and were always released on a Friday the 13th. The Halloween movies, though, should have always been released in late September or October.

Would have to look back at box office openings - but I wonder if we've ever had a F13th opening in October on a 'Friday the 13th'.

Of course they make money, otherwise they wouldn't keep making them. Horror movies are ridiculously easy to turn a profit because the production costs are low (usually no big name stars, shitty writing, minimal effects, etc.) and horror fans will apparently pay money watch anything. (Paranormal Activity for example.)

So horror movies not put out around Halloween are as prevalent and common today in cinemas and make money just like: Action Adventure Drama Comedy Kids Movies Interesting. Interesting indeed.

Just Die Hard. Lethal Weapon is set during Christmas but it isn't a real factor or even a prominent backdrop. Theres some christmas trees and things like that but thats it. Die Hard has christmas music incorporated into the soundtrack, is set at an office christmas party, theres a santa outfit, etc. And its theme is ultimately a couple getting back together and spending christmas morning together. I love Die Hard.
