Where is Mary Poppins Returns already in theaters for Emily Blunt to be nominated? Most Likely private Screenings held for press, I would think.

I didn't like BP, but a ton of people did. So who am I to say it's undeserving? I might re-watch it soon to see if I have a different reaction. I liked it fine, but I still don't think it deserves a nomination based strictly on merit. I have contempt for awards on face value, but that's beside the point. I haven't seen a Comic Book Movie that has deserved a nomination for best movie of the year. A few have come close. Black Panther as a touchstone for society? It might deserve it in that context though.

I liked Black Panther. I didn't consider it particularly dramatic, and probably not award winning. But it's the Golden Globes. I rarely ever mind when those awards are won because I never watch them. I'll bat an eyelash the next day though if I like something that won something. I'm practically there with the Oscars too, give or take who's hosting. I wish the results didn't still hold some intrigue for me. Guilty pleasure maybe, considering they've annoyed me for years.

Any award ceremony other than Oscars really has little prestige. If Black Panther is voted in the Oscars for a major nom, then there would be a huge backlash, but since its an unlikely scenario theres no cause for concern.

While it's not foolproof the fact that it was nominated for a Golden Globe ups it's chance at being nominated for an Oscar. Some opinions i've seen from Parade, EW, Vulture, NPR and other sites. With Blackkklansman predicted to win the Oscar. Again it's not a foregone conclusion, but Black Panther has a good chance for the Oscar Nomination. If I were to bet on it, I'd put my money on it getting the nomination. I don't bet on things like that though.

Honestly a nomination for Best Original Song is the one that made sense.

Honestly a nomination for Best Original Song is the one that made sense. I understand why it's getting nominated. I don't believe it's completely on the merits of the movie. Not to take away from the movie. It's a solidly made movie, and I liked it. I believe it's getting the nomination because of the cultural milestone and zeitgeist it tapped into. Is that right or wrong? Personally, it's a valid reason for a movie to be praised. Is it a reason for an Oscar Nomination? I don't know. I honestly don't know the criteria the Oscars uses. People may look at it as a sum greater than it's parts, situation.

I don't bet on things like that though. They discarded the popular movie award amidst backlash, so it would be strange if Black Panther (which would have be odds on to win that) would then get selected for a Best Picture/Best Adapted Screen Play/Best Director award. With its formulaic typical superhero narrative, I just cant see it getting nominated in any major category, the Academy doesn't like those type of films.

The Backlash can be seen as coming from the changing the Oscars on a fundamental level. The nomination of Black Panther, although odd for it's a blockbuster popcorn movie, isn't unprecedented. I don't know what site it was but there will be some markers that will lead to an Oscar nom coming up. In the next couple weeks keep your eye on the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Broadcast Film Critics Association for it's Critics Choice Awards, and the SAG awards (best ensemble is the equivalent to Oscar's Best Drama and something like only 2 movies ever have won a Best Picture Oscar and not gotten the SAG award for best ensemble). If Black Panther snags those nominations it's almost certain to get an Oscar Nomination.

well it got nominated for Best Picture for the Broadcast Film Critics Association for it's Critics Choice Awards which gives it more of a push. The SAG award nominations come out tomorrow the 12th. If it gets one for best Ensemble then it would be even a bigger push for Oscar Nominations.

Something I never understood, why are there awards for best drama movie, best musical movie, best comedy, best animated movie but no awards for best action movie or best adventure movie or best blockbuster?

My guess? The stigma against action, adventure and blockbusters. Granted comedies do have a stigma too, but we are talking about the Foreign Press. Comedy has less of a stigma around the world. With the bizillion westerns out there especially during the first 50 years of the Golden Globes you would think that would be one. Kinda half joking there, but I wouldn't have put it past them.

No. it was to find space to get movies in that dont deserve to be in. this is the golden globes version of the oscar popular category.

So the golden globes best drama is the equivalent of oscar popular category? Man, what the hell are you smoking?
