BlockHed for a raving rant that was rather lucid.....and probably closer to the truth than most of the audience that will eat this movie up- won't care about.
But we are talking almost the 'Citizen Kane' of Anime of it's time, are we not.
May the ghost of Akira Kurosawa find them while their sleeping.

"The PG-13 Rating is spitting in the face of the original anime & manga, which used blood/ violence to show how much disregard cyborgs would have for their hardware."
What a bullshit are you talking about? GitS is still not rated yet.

If you look past the trailer and study the screen-shots, the city back-drops looked pretty amateurish, terrible and artificial. How much production time went into this thing? If you look at the filming schedule- not much, so everything is told mostly in the effects shots.
At least the casting is better than Margot Robbie who was originally proposed for the lead. Scarlett Johansson at least looks kinda edgy?

(it's a Ghost of a World) Scarlett Johansson (mediocre actress at best) has an estimated net worth of $80 million. Thora Birch (was a pretty good actress) net worth of $8 million. One had product placement the other did not

lets not try & pretend that this isn't another epic cash-grab made for the lowest common denominator, all indications point to a PG-13 rating.

Boy, this sure looks terrible. Everything about it seems like they're throwing out all the unique and creative elements of GITS in favor of a generic RoboCop rip-off. And reports like this:
certainly aren't helping matters.

This yt reviewer seems to dislike every movie in varying degrees.
I tried watching a few of her other movie reviews and could not find one that she says out right that she likes.
I think I'm gonna watch GITS and form my own opinion.

I'm gonna bite the bullet and defend it as a business move. Would it be more authentic to have an Asian actress? Yeah but I can't think of any having the same box office draw as Johansson.

I'm not a fan of Anime and I know nothing about Ghost in the Shell. However, Scarlett Johansson is pleasing to my eyes.

I'm looking forward to being very disappointed at this.
I really don't care about the racial or white-washing business, I just think Johansson isn't right for the part. The major is sexy by design, not function...scar jo doesn't turn it off, the Major only rarely ever turns it on. Secondly, I've never felt Johansson could sell 'smart'. Whenever she is playing an intelligent character, she just turns up her smugness. As her character in 'Lucy' increased in power, she just looked increasingly 'over it'.
I just don't see Major Kusanagi successfully painted with that brush.
AND I don't like that Batou can apparently put on and take off his optical enhancements. They're supposed to be implants he got when in the special forces before signing up with Sec.9, and adds a permanence to his personal and emotional barriers through his lack of human eyes.

Regardless of the context, this has to be one of the most insightful statements I've read all day!

I feel that anyone who's fine with Idris Elba playing Roland Deschain has no business complaining about the Major being played by Scarjo.

I want it to be good, but Ehren Kruger is one of the worst screenwriters in Hollywood, so my expectations are fairly low.

It has a 62 rating on Metacritic and a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 6.1/10, based on 45 reviews. The critics consensus is: 'Ghost in the Shell boasts cool visuals and a compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson, even if the end result lacks the magic of the movie's classic source material.'

The end result is a weak movie, visually and storywise. Especially the latter is its worst offense.
How can you end up with that kind of cliched and shallow story? They'ld have been better off just redoing the first anime movie entirely, not just ripping off several of the scenes.
It's a huge disappointment, not even worth a six out of ten rating.

I also just keep thinking about the story, I'm certain that I've seen it before, the main twist near the end. I've seen it somewhere else, and I'm not sure if it was part of the GitS series or not. Definitely not the movies, that is certain.
I tried google, but it also does not seem to be part of the series either.
It's hard to explain without spoiling the movie, though given that it's a horrible movie, I'm not sure if me spoiling it would be a bad thing. Still, I'm not going to, I'll probably post the question on the INTK board with a spoiler tag on it.
This is going to keep bugging me though.

It's a huge disappointment, not even worth a six out of ten rating. 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not a surprise to me, why should it be a surprise to anyone. Just look at the logline: 'In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals." I mean, come on. "Six Million Dollar Man" "Six Million Dollars Woman" "Robocop" "Wolverine" "Deadpool" and a dozens of other sci-fi films. The allure of Akira was the then-fresh and exciting Japanese animation aspect of it. But as a story it was never anything groundbreaking as a tale, and 30 years later, frankly, it's just a worn-out storyline.
