When was the first time that you recall you became aware that there is a theory that explains how life evolved on earth? What was your feeling (if you could remember) after knowing that we are a product of evolution of billions of years?
I think I came to know about it when I was about 8 or 9. It was summers and there were frequent power cuts in my small town which was located in the poorest state of India. So we used to go to the roof of the house and sleep in the open air as inside the house it was burning hot. My uncle was then a student of science and he used to tell us kids about different things and it was him that told us first about the big bang theory and the theory of evolution. I remember I was super excited and extremely happy to know that humans evolved from early ape-like creatures who themselves evolved from different looking creatures. My uncle's knowledge may not have been totally correct but he did pretty well to get the main point across that all life form ultimately share a common ancestor. But it was still fun to listen to him and his own theories such as how horses were smaller in size 1000s of years ago and how our left hand will eventually disappear ( I am not sure if any of that is true or he made up all that). I remember even trying to read his books when I was 9 or 10 but I was not able to understand a lot. But I never had a problem in getting the main point. I was totally happy and fascinated by the scientific theory of evolution. But then there's a worldwide survey that says that majority of Indians have no problems in accepting evolution as in fact more people in India accept it (percentage wise) than people of any other country.
I wonder how you folks took to it? May be some of you atheists might have been religious then? So did you readily accept it or had conflicts or disbelieved it? Or still disbelieve it?

When was the first time that you recall you became aware that there is a theory that explains how life evolved on earth? That would be in school. "Whoa, cool!" I always thought Evolution is an extremely cool idea. Like many great ideas it's so clever, and yet once you understand it so simple and obvious. It feels like it's not just true, but that it couldn't possibly be anything but true because it just makes so much sense.
Your uncle sounds like a most excellent guy!
No, I was never religious so I never had any problem with that.

My first memory was as an early teen, where my parents (both very observant Christians) described it in somewhat mocking tones, yet not outright rejection. I suppose they considered it unlikely. I don't recall it ever being discussed much in school, which, when I look back at it now, I find quite scandalous. In other areas of science my parents were quite interested, and my dad taught me much about astronomy, mechanics, electicity, and other topics, and later followed up with mostly good science classes in school. My dad accepted that the universe was at least as old as the time required for light to travel from the distant galaxies to earth. I learned about evolution after graduating high school pretty much on my own, reading science books and magazines, at which time I accepted it even though I still considered myself a Christian at the time.

Probably school or some natural history book.

Evolution has always been a confusing topic for me because I was never good at understanding scientific topics. I had no knowledge of it even though I was always aware of the term, and I was taught by my older brother that it wasn't real like global warming, but I didn't actually learn more about it until I took an Evolution class in college for a science credit. I remember always being confused because I grew up with a negative impression that it was wrong to believe in it, but learning about it gave me a different perspective.
When I told my dad I was taking the class, he told me that the belief in God and belief in evolution are compatible and don't contradict as long as you believe that it was part of God's plan and don't believe that our own souls have evolved since that is what makes us unique in God's image. I think that's where it would be hard to determine where and how our souls were somehow created through the evolution process though.
I ended up getting a C in that class so idk if I can say I really get it 😂

As long as I can remember or at least since I began reading and watching TV.
To this day I have seen no evidence that we are the products of billions of years of evolution beyond pretty pictures.

@graham Exactly the same feelings here. I always felt that evolution alone makes sense of things. The other option seems so funny. Like some god creature with a magic stick saying rhinoceros and then rhinoceros appears all of a sudden. Mr. God says chicken and then chicken appears. Now that may seem realistic to certain people but definitely not to me. Evolution feels like a natural state of progress. Slowly and steadily living beings modifying into more complex or diverse forms because of a need for adjustment or other external reasons. The main point here is to understand that the changes occur very slowly. 50 consecutive generations of any species may not even look even a bit different from each other. But that doesn't mean evolution isn't happening. It's just subtle and invisible to naked eyes. Same with me. I feel lucky in that.

And I am afraid there isn't ever going to be an answer about how our souls evolved through the evolution process because 1) there is no way to identify anything called soul and 2) even if there were, evolution deals with the physical world and not spiritual.
Edit: Nevermind, Geode answered your point better than me.

I am not sure when I first heard of it, but when I first learned about the science that is involved was in high school biology class, as a sophomore. I would have been 15 years old. Even my very religious friends accepted the reality in the evidence presented to us.

I think most "theistic evolutionists" think that the human "body" evolved, but at some point in evolution (time of Adam and Eve) was combined with the "spirit" that did not evolve. The combination of the two creates the "soul"....

Thanks. I didn't know what was the thinking employed by the theistic evolutionists.

I don't remember. I know I learned about evolution in school but I already had some basic ideas about it... Like most kids I was fascinated by dinosaurs and any book or documentary I saw assumed the fact of evolution.
I was also raised Catholic, and the story of Adam and Eve was never thought to me as fact and more like a metaphor.

I really don't remember. As a kid I loved dinosaurs (I watched Jurrassic Park in theaters) but I really didn't know much about evolution. In school I think it was briefly tossed around, really don't rememeber too much. Most of what I learned about evolution was probably from the Internet/Youtube (Aronra in particular)
