Technically speaking, I suppose you could say the game was decided by superior play rather than a flag deciding the game.
Regardless of who played better, the score was tied at that point. The Saints played well enough to put them in position to win. The Rams did not take them out of that position. The refs did. Why even play the game if the refs are just going to pick the winner? They should have just said, "We want the Rams to win. No reason to play the game. If you can blow somebody out, you will win. But if the game is close, we are going to decide who wins." No reason to play or watch close games.
conspiracy....

The NFL would rather have New England and Southern California in the Super Bowl. Two of the biggest markets. Instead of Kansas City and New Orleans. Two of the smallest markets. The NFL has a lot of money invested in that new LA stadium. And they have been trying to get back in LA for years. Its all about money. One ref was disqualified because he allegedly had ties to New Orleans. Those two refs who blew that call live in LA. The NFL doesn't care about fairness. It's all about the money.

Perhaps but there is a lot of hate for New England. I think thousands will not watch simply because NE is in the SB.

Two large market teams played in the SB last year and the ratings were at a 10 year low. Pretty much the same story line Mighty Brady and the Mighty Patriots against the Underdog from the NFC. And any Super Bowl matchup is going to bring in massive ratings.

Never should have gone to overtime. Unless the Saints blew their opportunity to win. Yes the Rams beat the Saints in overtime. So? Just keep screwing the Saints until the Rams can beat them? Yep, it was an awful call....and the Saints still had a chance to win, and they didnt. Get over it. I remember the Tuck Rule game, the Raiders got totally screwed. And guess what, they still got the ball back in regulation and overtime, did nothing, and lost. Lots of teams get screwed by bad calls, basically every team that's ever existed. But if you get screwed and the game ends, that's one thing. If you get screwed, then still get a chance to rise above it and win, and you don't, then what are you whining about? That's like saying; "Terrible things happen. They always have. Don't do anything about it. Just allow terrible things to keep happening. Don't fix it. Don't prevent it. Just let terrible things keep happening." What is that?

I never put it like that, don't put words in my mouth. I'm not saying "don't do anything, let terrible things happen, blah blah". In fact I'm saying just the opposite. I'm saying that everyone gets hit with shit calls, you can either give up, or if you have the chance, you keep fighting. The Saints got hit with a shit call, then were blessed with another chance to win the thing, but quite honestly looked like they just gave up. There's a lot more to a game than one call, maybe if the Saints were so great, they should have scored more than 20-something points to begin with, and not put themselves in a position where the game came down to the wire.

We are continuing to fight. A local attorney has filed suit against the NFL to either replay the final 2 minutes or postpone the Super Bowl. And Saints fans and NFL fans are discussing, debating and arguing about it --- and demanding an investigation. Hopefully all this will --- at the very least --- bring about positive change that will benefit everybody.

But hopefully the rules committee will address this issue in the off season, and make positive changes that will benefit everybody.

I would be mad, just like I was mad after that Cowboys game where the Eagles were screwed, but I move on. I have never seen backlash like this. The Saints fans act like the NFL is forever ruined for everyone and the Super Bowl should be boycotted. They had many chances to win and they blew it. The objective football fan doesn't want a conference championship where one team blows out the other. We finally get two equally matched teams playing a close game. Obviously a game like this can come down to one play, one mistake or one bad call. If the Rams had won on their own, no argument. If the Saints had lost on their own, no argument. But when the refs decide the game with an obvious bad call, nobody objective wants to see that. The referees are supposed to be impartial and fair. The Saints had gotten into position to win the game. And the Rams didn't take them out. The refs did. The Saints WERE in position to win the game. They lost on their own. They won the toss in overtime and got the ball. They failed.

The refs were going to hold the Saints down until the Rams could beat them.

FFS give it up. The Saints aren't the first team to suffer a bad call late in the game and they won't be the last. But court challenges? And who knows what happens if the penalty is paid? Maybe the kicker chokes and misses that chip shot. Maybe it's blocked and returned for a TD.

We shouldn't even play football because --- I don't know --- maybe the demons from The Birdcage will kill all humanity !!! According to hoskatafe we should let those referees from LA cheat because we could all be dead tommorrow. That makes a lot of sense. Why even have rules.

In fact, I seem to recall you - I’m sure it was you - saying in the play by play thread after the Saints/Steelers game that bad calls happen in every game to every team and that they all even out over the course of a season.

I believe that bad call against the Steelers (when playing the Saints) was an honest mistake. This non-call against the Saints for the Rams was pure intentional cheating. The NFL has a lot of money invested in LA. The Chargers and the Rams just moved there. They are building a new expensive stadium. The two biggest markets are the Northeast (New England) and Southern California (Los Angeles). A ref was excused before the game because he had ties to New Orleans. But what do you know --- the two that intentionally fucked that obvious call live in --- you guessed it --- MOTHERFUCKING LOS ANGELES !!! It was a conspiracy by the NFL to get LA and New England in the Super Bowl. Might as well watch the fucking WWE for fake pre-determined bullshit entertainment designed to separate NFL fans from their money and put it in the pockets if the FUCKING NFL.

lols lawsuits
The case in point is over a botched referee call, which is part of the NFL's logistical being. In no way shape or form were fans or bettors involved or whatever robbed of the NFL's legal realm.
The play was not ruled a catch. The play was not awarded points. The score clock did not malfunction. etc etc
A writer on sports radio earlier pointed out the George Brett pine tar replay, because 162 game season, ability to restart from objective failed ruling. The same conversation pointed out a Magic-Hawks game where Shaq was wrongly fouled out, when in fact he hadn't accumulated enough fouls yet. That was another objective failure, which was replayed. It was also just a couple minutes, I think played as a 'double header' before the same teams' next meeting.

Why even bother sdm? He's got the tin foil blinkers on to the stage that it's the sensible and measured arguments (including his own) that he's finding crazy, rather than the idea that the NFL consorted with two referees to make sure that a penalty wasn't paid in order to cost New Orleans a game, even though they still took the lead the very next play.
But I'll give it one last try. Surely if there was a league wide conspiracy it wouldn't leave so much to chance? The side that was scripted to win wouldn't fall behind in the last minute. The scripted winner wouldn't have needed to kick a 48 yard FG to extend the game to OT and then a 57 yarder to win in said OT. The undesirable team would not have had first possession in OT. Why would a conspiracy leave so much to chance?
