A lot of votes for LOST but the whole show was garbage so I'm not sure why a lousy ending was surprising. I imagine the shows with the worst endings would just be the worst shows anyway. Like wouldn't 2 Broke Girls, being the worst series in history, most likely have the worst ending as well? But most of us probably don't continue watching shows that we find to be awful, so I guess this is most likely just the most disappointing series finales. I tried to start watching Lost early on but I never found anything interesting about it, so I can't really comment. Yeah that's pretty much my point on Lost. I loved the first season, didn't like the second season, and completely gave up after the opening to season 3. As in literally, I watched the cold opening to season 3, and gave up on the show. I didn't even watch the rest of that episode, never mind the rest of the series. I wasn't surprised to find out the ending was garbage because the entire show was garbage. The writers were flailing the entire time, what did you expect? But overall I think the best shows can have the worst endings. I loved Seinfeld back in the day but that ending was just dumb. Dexter was very up and down; I think the show never could've had a satisfactory finale when you consider the subject matter. Again, at best a finale is always going to be underwhelming. By that point the show has either run its course and you're waiting for it to die, or it's so good you want it to go on forever. Either way the finale is going to be disappointing. I haven't watched a sitcom since Seinfeld so I'll have to take your word on 2 Broke Girls.

I haven't watched a sitcom since Seinfeld so I'll have to take your word on 2 Broke Girls. I don't know, Dexter handled it in the worst possible way, but I think they could have come up with something that worked well enough. It was always gonna end in a downer sort of way, or he could have kept getting away with it and just faded out as he somehow never gotten caught, or something other than what they did. I think there were ways it could have worked. If the show ended after the John Lithgow season finale I think that would have been perfect. I think the Breaking Bad finale was totally solid. But yes, if a show doesn't plan towards its ending from the beginning then it's in trouble. Nowadays I think there's an emphasis in shorter seasons and limited runs and the endings are, in many cases, written as part of the whole thing... Which is better. Penny Dreadful was a really good show when it was allowed to be. But they were building towards something that never actually came to fruition. They tried to spin it and say that they had planned the ending, but clearly they rushed everything and never got to pay off lots of things they were slowly developing previously. But, the point is that if they had been given a chance to squeeze one or two more seasons out of that then it might have actually all made sense. And I like the Seinfeld finale. Mostly now after the fact watching Larry David be the only to defend it on Curb Your Enthusiasm, but still...

Yeah they tried to have it both ways with Dexter; Be bleak, but keep it open ended at the same time. Nobody wanted lumberjack Dexter. I'm the one person who never got into Breaking Bad so I can't really comment. Nice pull with Penny Dreadful, I didn't think anyone else watched that show. That ending was clearly rushed, I don't know why the creator tried to insist they always planned it that way. Probably just playing nice with the network. I don't have particularly strong feelings for the Seinfeld finale, I just remember thinking it was lame. To be honest I had already stopped watching the show on a regular basis by then.

I watched it all to the end as it was fairly entertaining for the most part but the intrigue and excitement of what was going to happen next was lost (no pun intended) somewhere around the midway point. I assumed they were already dead and in some form of purgatory around season 4 and the finale proved it. A huge letdown compared to where the show started.

Would tune in every once in a while for a bit to see if it was still just as bad-- it was. "Jokes' you could see coming from a mile away. And Kat Dennings had terrible dialogue delivery and the worst one-liners in TV history.

To be fair, Twin Peaks didn't really end. After Season 2, it was canceled. After Season 3, I'm fairly certain they are intent on making future seasons. Deadwood was also canceled.

How I Met Your Mother! Even though the episode was great, I wasn't crazy on how Angel ended. Angel ended awesome, dude!

The best endings thread just made me think of another contender here:- Star Trek: Enterprise.
They turned the entire final episode into an episode of ANOTHER show!! I doubt any other series has ever been treated with such contempt as that.

Lost
Abrams has become the bane of franchises: H. P. Lovecraft, Star Wars, Star Trek...what he touches turns shit.
Battlestar Galactica (re-imaged)

I loved Penny Dreadful, and will forever give a chance to anything that Eva Green is in. She's amazing, and not just when doing nude scenes. She was genuinely terrific on that show. But yes, that last season was so obviously rushed and it was pretty insulting that they expected us to believe that they were on track ending it when they did. This show introduced Dr. Jekyll and his project of creating a serum that dealt with the dark side of the personality, and then never went anywhere with that. They obviously were setting up more great, and long term story threads. I just wish we could have seen where that all went.
