What are your Top 5? I go: 1. State of Grace 2. Goodfellas 3. Donnie Brasco 4. Hoffa 5. Amongst Friends Where go you? Go! sidenote * - I'm watching 'A Bronx Tale' again - anybody ever hear the tragic tale of what happened in real life to the 'kid' 'Colojodojello' in the movie? talk about life imitating art.............

I’m not a huge fan of the genre but here goes. Godfather I & II are obviously classics as is Goodfellas. I love The Untouchables with Kevin Costner and Robert DeNiro. Do you consider The Usual Suspects as a gangster movie or do you more mean like Mafia type movies?

Throw it in if you want since it has Mafia Ties - hell - throw in any flick with 'Mafia Ties' - i.e. True Romance, Suicide Kings......
I enjoyed The Usual Suspects - own it - haven't given it a watch in years.
Odd - I own The Untouchables too but never sat through the whole move - somehow I can't sit through any Kevin Costner movies - Dances with Wolves, Field of Dreams, The Untouchables.........
Godfather is on AMC right now...........
It's grown on me over the years - have just found it way too slow.

White Heat Angels with Dirty Faces The Roaring Twenties Public Enemy The Petrified Forest Your reference to 'Public Enemy'.... Different movie than 'Public Enemies' over here with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale? Was about American Gangster John Dillinger - was panned by the critics by being slow, dull, plodding and boring - I think you can make that account for a lot of Gangster flicks if that was your agenda - saw it in the theater and own it - enjoy it. You're from Donegal correct? Are these Irish Mob movies? Will have to look them up.

(Sorry!) Well I'm from Scotland but half of my forebears came from Donegal. I think there are a few Irish gangster movies - I remember one called Perrier's Bounty. Nothing special.

If you have any other recs for movies or books on Irish Mob Movies - would love to hear em - ancestors are from Donegal - enjoy reading a great deal; however can't recall a gangster book I thoroughly enjoyed. I regard: The Departed Boondock Saints State of Grace Millers Crossing 10th and Wolf as Irish Gangster movies - but I'm livin' in Philly dude

There's a more famous James Bulger in the UK (more famous here at least.)

The Godfather The Godfather: Part II Goodfellas Casino Scarface scarface was on AMC today that and Casino have both grown on me over the years tragic stories in that in both - we see friendship dissolve into bitterness and hate - i.e. tony montana with friend who has a thing for his sister - and in casino - deniro and pacino being friends but greed gets the best of their friendship...... it's one of the reasons I love gangster movies - they typically span every emotion under the sun. love lust greed hate revenge sorrow

never heard of your bottom 4. i'll look into them. godfather series is growing on me a bit - just found them slow and methodical when I was younger - but now giving them a rewatch on the countless marathons can appreciate some of the movies tone about money, power, respect and love.

DEAD END
Angels With Dirty Faces
Petrified Forest
The Harder They Fall
A Bronx Tale (best of the "modern" gangster movies by far, and it was a reach to include even one of the modern ones)
I felt that D.O.A. 1950 didn't have gangsters in the mix as a major part of the plot, as they were a red herring. However, 'The Harder They Fall" had the gangsters in a major role.
Some I would give honorable mention to also include a few "modern" ones that I'll list last:
The Roaring Twenties White Heat Scarface 1932 Dillinger At Close Range The Untouchables
There's one that some consider a gangster movie, and even the writing-directing team insists it's not supernatural, but only works as a supernatural thriller, called THE USUAL SUSPECTS, which makes another list. If one thinks it is a gangster movie, it can't be considered, because then it is just another ridiculous Hollywood cliché. However, if one watches it as a story of the real Devil dealing with those who think they can deal with him, it's a fantastic story.

Eastern Promises is absolutely brilliant. One of Cronenberg’s best. Great call.
