I was thinking about that poor bastard soccer player who was killed in that plane crash last week. From what I've heard, he knew the plane was in big trouble while it was in the air. There probably was a period of time there where he KNEW he was going to die. The horror of that must be beyond awful.
I'm not 100% sure what I would be like in that situation, but I know one thing for sure: I'd be praying my ass off, either for safety or at least the least painful way for the crash to happen.
That got me wondering what does an atheist do in that situation? I mean, there's no God, you know THAT for sure. Do you just sit there and accept your fate, or are you wishing for a different outcome? And if so, who exactly are you wishing that from? Your mom? Your cat?
Interesting to think about. If any of you dopes who think there's no God want to chime in, feel free. I mean, I know you have a lot to think about, what with that trip to the fires of Hell in the back of your mind. But maybe one of you fools can share some thoughts, even as cynical and blasphemous they can be.

It's a conditioned reflex.

We all have to go sometime, and most of the time we have no say in how that happens. Having said that, that's one of the reasons I refuse to fly anymore. I can't stand the thought of having absolutely no control on whether I live or die.

We pray to Yoda's force ghost to keep the plane in the air.

If you visit the religion board you will find that atheists do not claim to know for sure that God does not exist. They claim they have not seen enough evidence to believe in one. Only very rare (hard atheists) atheists claim that they know for sure that God doesn't exist. I am an apatheist so I also do not believe in any God.
I agree with the poster them1ghtyhumph when he says that some of the atheists could turn to god in the moment of crisis. But it is probably not true in all circumstances. People are different and think differently. Some will not be thinking about a saviour or even how to save themselves. They might just accept their fates that they might die in a few seconds and remember their close relatives in those dying moments. People react differently to moments of crisis and fear.

Now you seem like one of the nicest posters here, so I'll just say that I hope you change your mind about some things. Other than that, you might want to get a BIG bottle of sunscreen, at least 30-40 spf.....and maybe invest in a hand-fan or something. It might be a wee hot where you're headed. 🔥🔥🔥

I always felt like I might die that way. Many years ago on a flight to Alaska, the turbulence was so bad the masks flew out of the upper compartments. People were screaming. Some thought we were going down. I remember just thinking, "well, here it is." It sucked but I was ready. No praying to any mystical magical man in the sky. I just looked out the window and hoped it'd be quick. If there was a god up there, he wouldn't have let all those die hard Christians die in the planes on 9/11 to some other religious fanatics.

Um, maybe some atheists but don't speak for all of us. I know there is no god. Just a fantasy created to keep the people in line. If there was a god, he would have made himself known long before 2000 years ago, he wouldn't have allowed thousands of different contrasting religions and he wouldn't have made his own religion so contradictory. I love having discussions with Christians about this stuff. "What happened to all the people who were born before Christ? They never had the opportunity to accept him. Where did they all go?" "To hell." "So they went to hell because they were born too early?" "Yup." Um, okay. What a great god you have there.

Actually, I sort of like the position of those atheists that I mentioned. When we talk about God we do not necessarily have to assume a personal god. You can also assume a generic god or an impersonal god. Now you cannot disprove a negative. It's impossible to prove that something which is not known does not exist. From that perspective I find the position of soft atheists (or agnostic atheists) far better than hard atheists who are 100% certain that God does not exist. But that's just my personal opinion. I am not claiming that my particular opinion is necessarily right.

Only a fool would say they know for sure there is a God.
And only a fool would say they know for sure there isn't a God.
The truth is, NO ONE knows for sure. I've got my faith though, and it makes me happy.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect everyone's right to practice or not practice whatever they want. I was just pointing out you made the blanket statement "you will find that atheists do not claim to know for sure that God does not exist" which is not true. I say no god exists. Thats just me. But atheists in general do not "claim to know for sure..."

Ask if their is a father on board to administer last rites.
If not... Cross mesen. Hold my crucifix and saints medallions. Our Father. Hail Mary. Psalm 23:4 Confess that I have sinned and seek absolution. Ask St Francis to pray for me. Have a last fag. Shite me pants.

The definition of atheism is a belief that there is no god, so if your belief is not that absolute then doesn't that make you agnostic?
That's generally how, I guess I'd categorize my feelings, but I also couldn't possibly believe in such a jealous and litigious force. If it all came down to technicalities I wouldn't want anything to do with it anyway.

That visualization comes from Dante and yet fear mongering Christian recruiters really harp on this point.
