My fear with that is Conley is going to be 32 before the start of next season - and I think he still has a couple of years left on that huge contract.
I'd be fearful of giving up assets (i.e. Fultzy and the 2021 Miami First Rounder) for a PG who may break down relatively soon.
Think Jrue is 28 (will be 29) by the start of next season.
1. Another star scorer.
2. A real point guard while Simmons plays forward.
3. An adult star. A highly respected vet star who Simmons and Embid could actually consider their superior and defer to which I personally think they need. I don't think Butler fills this role well at all and I don't think Holiday would either. Conley is insanely underrated and easily a top-5 floor general. Honestly him being considered not as good as CP3 over the past 10 years is highly debatable. I know his contract is a dog but if the Sixers are serious about being the best team in the East this would make that happen. Giannis isn't going anywhere and Kawhi leaving Toronto isn't a certainty. If the Sixers can get Conley for just Butler and one other $10-12 mil player then this is a no-brainer IMO. And Conley's expiring contract itself will be an asset in 2021 to any team looking to unload (including the Sixers should Simmons sign the qualifying offer and become a FA).
Anyway there's no indication Holiday is available but the Grizzlies are actively trying to unload Conley and Gasol and would clearly prefer to send them to the East.
I was hoping Butler would be that Vet presence; however worst fears seem to come true that he puts his ego first.
Been a giant proponent of sticking Simmons at the '4' - they're weak there - but still let him handle the ball 75% of the time since he's a magician coming up the court. You use another Combo Guard (this was supposed to be Fultzy) to handle ball handling responsibilities at times when teams are pressuring Simmons in the open court.
You can also use Simmons down low as a 'threat' (the only area on the court where he's willing to shoot) - as you have a ball handler like Jrue (or in your case Conley) - being the QB (leader) and dictating the game - being the floor general in proper situations dependent on matchups.
As far as Holiday not being available....
If you were the Pels - he's 28 now. AD has requested a trade. Full tank mode so to speak to gain assets?
I mean - if you can get some respectable assets for Jrue since AD is bolting - wouldn't you pull the trigger now when his worth is at it's highest?
Or would you be confident in the return you're getting from AD - that Jrue can pretty much lead the team into contention?
