I've rarely found a film boring, but I think it's a valid criticism. Like vits said though it should be backed up with some solid reasoning. Film making is an art form, so it's entirely subjective. Don't be offended if someone else thinks the film was the most engaging thing ever made.

I think it's a valid opinion. I'm of the opinion that you can pull a good movie kicking and screaming out of just about any subject material, but if it's not interesting to you then it'll really have to go the extra mile to change your mind.
I think when the criticism is turned around on the viewer, it's usually sour grapes; i.e. it's you, not the movie. Good luck with that is my approach.

or is it always a reflection on the one making the comment? Only if it comes with other facts and figures to back it up.
I think we can all agree that we've all seen movies that were extremely slow paced but highly engaging.

Wasn't it Stanley Kubrick who said something along the lines of "A film should be able to capture one's attention within the first 20 minutes". So if a film fails to do that, then it did something wrong.

Kind of, it depends on the type of film.

It is valid. If anyone doesn't think so, watch Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels (1975) and get back to me. Very nearly 4 hours of a laconic, emotionally repressed French dame making her bed, couch bed up, fixing her and her teenage son breakfast, washing dishes, turning an occasional trick, going shopping, eating lunch, washing dishes, fixing supper etc etc. Waking up and doing it all over again. Trotting from room to room, back and forth again in her small apartment. For 4 days worth. I caught it on Turner Classic. At least at the end one of her johns manages to give her an orgasm. This freaks her out and she grabs a pair of scissors and stabs him in the chest. THE END 😩

You are confusing slow-moving with boring I think. I would never refer to 2001: A Space Odyssey as boring. Something can be fast moving and boring too. I find a lot of fast action scenes overly repetitive and boring in movies like Fast n Furious. The people of who call Space Odyssey boring would be complaining about the lack of plot rather than slow pace I think.

For the record I'm not claiming "I found the film boring" isn't a valid criticism. Quite the opposite actually. The thread stemmed from the number of times I've seen posters get called out for calling a film boring and had the critique turned back on them. The thread was sort of asking "Come on...surely sometimes it's warranted".

Yes. If I find a movie boring it isn’t feeling me in. That’s not to say everyone finds those same movies boring. Everyone’s got different tastes.

If they are complaining about lack of plot then it doesn't make sense that they consider it a great movie. The person I was replying to said it is possible to consider a movie great and boring at the same time and I am saying that it is impossible for a movie to be great and boring at the same time. That is why I said he is confusing slow-moving with boring.

If they are complaining about lack of plot then it doesn't make sense that they consider it a great movie. 2001 lacks a traditional plot structure, but it doesn't lack a plot. Therefore, a person who prefers movies driven by visuals/atmosphere can still call it a great movie.

I am confused, because you seem to be replying in an attempt to shed light, but you basically just agreed with me. If they are a person who prefers movies driven by atmosphere and visuals then they wouldn't be complaining about lack of a traditional plot and thus wouldn't be bored by the movie.

I see your point, but I was talking about many people that I heard saying: "Oh, great visuals, great movie, so ahead of its time... but kind of boring". I think it´s a great movie, and I know is slow-moving, I don´t consider it boring, but I have to admit I´m not always in the mood for watching it.
