The church is technically a group of people. It's not a building. And the early church DID have their worship services in houses. And many churches (usually of the Anabaptist flavor) continue to do this today. They still have weekend gatherings (for sermons and worship), but "church" is done in smaller communities throughout the week.

I don't need churches, but I sometimes enjoy their presence. They are good for - concerts and plays - architecture - artworks - moments of quietness - family gatherings

It was a clever scheme to get all who were most easily open to propaganda and brain washing into one place, where in addition they could get them to pay for it!

With the exception of "community centers" all the alternatives to religious meetings you mentioned were especially exclusionary, more so than any religious service. Perhaps now you can guess why. You're welcome. One day you're going to look back on your life and think 'I sure wasted a lot of my time arguing semantics'. I won't even bother asking you what is so exclusionary about public libraries. ...and he seems to have something against bingo and carpet bowls!!!!

...and he seems to have something against bingo and carpet bowls!!!! Serious question, Goz, what the heck is a carpet bowl? Is that an Aussie thing? Bingo I am familiar with... When talking 'bowling' there is bowling in cricket, lawn bowls, bowling at a ten pins, and carpet bowls for elderly people in retirement homes. They stack up the ten pins on the lounge carpet and then bowl smaller balls at them to knock down. Sometimes it gets more serious www.pottersholidays.com/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/page-images/carpet%20bowls.jpg?itok=YN2BY4FA

No OSV - you don't. We do. Churches are for Christians not atheists. I'm not an atheist, I believe in ALL the Gods. People who only believe in one God are selective atheists. A fish does not need a third party to find water. It is the same with human beings and 'God'. If you think 'I need to go to that building and listen to those people to find God' then you have fallen for transparent spiritual blackmail. You've just shown that you don't know what churches are for. They're for Christians to meet together to have fellowship.

If I ever find myself contemplating that activity, I'm going to find someone to take me out back and shoot me. One thing Baptists were allowed to do (in lieu of dancing) was bowling. There were church leagues... oh, the amount of time I wasted watching grownups roll balls at pins!

One of the two churches I attend, does the same thing - or rather we have it both ways! Church on Sunday, all welcome whether members or not, life groups as we call them, during the week.
