On Monday, Catman went down to the local shelter and after talking with several candidates, he selected a young cat named Wella, so named because she was found with her kittens in someone's window well. Based on her behavior during the interaction, she clearly is a cat who, while shy and a bit skittish, will fit in with the Cat household once she gets used to the place. Her new name is Katsura Akane, named for Katsura, the tragic female lead from Terror of Megagodzilla, and JXSDF Lt. Akane Yashiro from Godzilla Against Megagodzilla. Having spent her life on the street before being taken to the shelter with her kittens, a house is completely outside her experience, and she's quite understandably confused and terrified. Given that she adjusted well to life in the shelter and was playful with staff and Catman, it's likely just the initial shock of having her world turned upside down again that's got her rattled. This evening, Catman put some of her things from the shelter close to her hiding place, food and water a few steps away, and a bowl of tuna bits close enough that she need only turn around to have a bite. Later, he's going to sit in her room and read from Winnie-the-Pooh.

Catman, you are the best, at being a great pet parent, and giving another special needs cat a loving home, even in the midst of your grief. Those of us who shelter and rescue wish that every adopter was just like you. Your new girl is a beauty; she may be shy and confused now but I predict that won't last long. Especially after hearing Winnie-the-Pooh a few times. It's a favorite of mine, too! All of my kitties (and puppies, et al) are used to hearing the "Soft Kitty" song from The Big Bang Theory. It's a wonderful lullaby.

Catman - I certainly don't wish to rob Katsura Akane of her moment in the limelight, but when I came across this article, I immediately thought of you. I hope it puts a smile on your face. Cat Sanctuary

Adoption lottery also makes me think of all the others who were not adopted and face imminent execution. Well, I guess that is why it is a lottery. The capricious nature of life and death. Existentially arbitrary and perhaps just a dash of good fortune for the rescued animals. Yes, she is pretty, but she is also, what we in rescue and sheltering call, a special needs cat. She needs to be humanized, and not every adopter is equipped to do that. Catman makes a habit of taking special needs kitties; that's why he is so special. I volunteer with a cat rescue group, and rest assured, rescue groups do not euthanize on the basis of space needed. That practice is becoming more rare. We keep a cat, in a foster home, for however long it takes to find the right adopter for that cat. We've had some wonderfully happy successes lately; an aged Burmese with only one eye went to a lovely older woman, and we waived the adoption fee. We give adopters a two-week (or more) window to see if the adoption is the right 'fit', if not, we take the cat back and it goes back to its volunteer's foster home, and the adopter chooses another cat or has their fee refunded. My specialty is taking abandoned kittens (dumped, many times in dumpsters) that have to be bottle fed until they are old enough to eat solid food, then find a Forever Home. Many times, a cat's care is funded out of the volunteer's own pocket, because donations and adoption fees are never enough to cover the bills. The best thing that anyone can do, to prevent the practice of euthanasia in shelters, is to spay and neuter your pets. There aren't enough homes for them all. Support your local shelter with donations or become a foster home. Many times they need volunteers that do not foster, but have accounting skills, or fundraising experience or know how to apply for grants. Donate items of value that can be auctioned for the funds. There are many ways to contribute. I've spent most of my adult life volunteering or working for shelters and rescue groups, regardless of how I was earning a living at the time. It is worth the time and effort; the cats, and the adopters who find their companion animal, make it an activity that, while sometimes sad, is mostly heartwarming.

Well, I guess that is why it is a lottery. The capricious nature of life and death. Existentially arbitrary and perhaps just a dash of good fortune for the rescued animals. Well, this is why I have no problem with feral cats living on the lam. Better stray than dead. Few will be adopted after being picked up by Animal Control. Animal Control many times picks up a feral and spays/neuters it, and releases it. They clip the tip of the ear, to show that it has been "fixed". As long as they are not making babies out there, they are allowed to live their lives.

Animal Control many times picks up a feral and spays/neuters it, and releases it. They clip the tip of the ear, to show that it has been "fixed". As long as they are not making babies out there, they are allowed to live their lives. I think it depends on the city. I know where I live all the snooty bourgeois people don't want stray cats in the neighborhood so Animal Control rounds them up and euthanizes them. Cats can get by in the wild. There is a bigger problem with dogs though. They can be vicious. There are industrial areas of Los Angeles where stray dogs run wild. I once had a pack chase me in my mustang convertible. Lol. I'm sure it does vary by city. And, given that some people see strays as potential things to torture, it is debatable whether or not euthanasia is better. Some rescue groups won't adopt to people who say they are going to have the cat declawed; our rescue group says 'better declawed than dead'. Where I live, the weather in winter is an issue. Many ferals can freeze to death, especially if it is a former housecat that has no survival skills, but has been abandoned by its owner. Humane rescue is, like anything else, subjective, and varies from group to group, city to city. But one thing holds true: spay or neuter your pet. That way, there are no accidental puppies or kitties. The Doris Day Animal League, some years back, gave a statistic; if one female cat and her kittens were allowed to stay feral and reproduce, in theory, in 7 years, that would result in 420,000 cats. It's called exponential growth. Just one cat and her kittens. Spay or neuter your pet. I'll get off my soapbox, now, and go back to telling Catman how happy I am that he has a new companion to love and nurture.

Right? This pretty kitty won the adoption lottery. Adoption lottery also makes me think of all the others who were not adopted and face imminent execution. Why must you always be that way? Watch and learn, you pessimistic, half-empty, devil's advocate wannabe... Have you saved one lately?

Why must you always be that way? Watch and learn, you pessimistic, half-empty, devil's advocate wannabe... No, the only thing stray cats need salvation from is Animal Control which euthanizes them. I say let them run free. If you call feral cats "devils", yes, I'm the devil's advocate. Not all shelters kill. My cat was in one for 9 months before I adopted her.
