These modern performers, just don't seem to have the dedication/ devotion you know? They just don't turning all the nighttime into the day.

As someone who is fast approaching 60 I feel enabled to say bollocks. People just get lazy seeking out new great stuff and fall back on the lazy habit of repeat playing the same old stuff they got into in their prime. I grew up as a London punk at the time when it was glorious, but I'm buggered if I'll just keep playing the same old records over and over again. I still see as many new bands as I can and they are all out there, with so much stuff out there (some would say too much) and the record labels and independents no longer sorting the wheat from the chaff it takes much more hard work but there is fantastic music in all genres just waiting to be discovered. None of this has f#@k all to do with the decline of the music industry, that was caused by an utter failure to change an outmoded business model and accept new technological advancements in delivery systems.
Love it when relatively young people act like grandads moaning the loss of the big band era and why aren't there any new Frank Sinatras around and "I can't understand a word they sing"
"meet the young farts, just the same as the old farts"

With so much stuff out there (some would say too much) and the record labels and independents no longer sorting the wheat from the chaff it takes much more hard work but there is fantastic music in all genres just waiting to be discovered. What you wrote above is absolutely true. Over the last ten years or so, I've purchased close to 200 albums. However, I agree that a lot of work went into finding those albums. The amount of music out there is astonishing. I've sifted through thousands of albums to find those I deemed worthy of purchase. But as you say, some people just get lazy. They expect to switch on the radio and hear a great song. That's as implausible a scenario as sitting outside with your mouth open and expecting to subsist on whatever falls into your mouth. Maybe a nice berry will land once in a while, but the majority of what you'll get is going to be bugs and bird droppings. Radio is dying medium. A 2017 study suggests that traditional radio could be dead in ten years. The study also notes that, "Younger music listeners have increasingly turned to sites like YouTube to discover new artists and songs." I stopped listening to traditional radio a long time ago. YouTube has been my "radio station" for years. If you really want to hear great music, go there. At this moment, I've got another 400 albums on YouTube bookmarked for future evaluation. P.S. If you're into traditional heavy metal, check my threads in the Rock forum where I posted my favorite 2015, 2016-ish, 2017 and 2018 albums.

I'm amused that string sections have come back like it was the 50's-early 60's again. Outside of classical music cellists have found a new source of employment. Cellists have been working with singer songwriters for many years now to be fair and along with violinists find much work in the Neo-Folk genre.

If you can get past the mainstream stuff you can find lots of interesting and good performers. It takes some research though that's for sure. It also helps to have a friend that is addicted to finding unnoticed or under-noticed performers that can point me in the right direction... I have to admit though, that I do fall back on the '60 thru '80s rock music though. It's a crutch. I won't deny it.

That's why the modern music industry is in dire straits. The world is in dire need of several things, not the least of which is a musical renaissance... nothing in commercial music today even comes close.
