" The IMDb User Reviews make it look "iffy" .. It has George fucking Kennedy how could I not? He has a good rapport with Garner and it had a cute surprise ending. To me such movies are like archeological relics that deserve respect if not adulation.

I watched MARLOWE a while ago. "You're light on your feet, Winslow. Are you just a little gay, huh?"
What intrigued me about THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS is that it was reported to be the last movie shot on the MGM backlot. The locations did look familiar. Are there any of the really old backlot streets left?

I really enjoyed Sunset and Twilight. Sunset not perfectly cast and Bruce Willisβs lazy approach to work really annoyed Garner. But it was very entertaining . I Twilight had a much better cast and all the twists and turns were beautifully played.
Other better known favorites .

Love the guy. He made it look easy - what better compliment to anyone in any profession.
Favourites? Too many, but......
Cash McCall and The Wheeler Dealers - back in the day the corporate raiders were the good guys, the regulators were "unAmerican". The Great Escape - Garner and Donald Pleasence were the heart and soul of that movie. The Americanization of Emily 36 Hours Mister Buddwing Grand Prix Hour of the Gun Marlowe and Twilight were the 2 I watched after hearing of his passing.
....and so many more.

He was too cool for school, fool! Marlowe brought Chandler's PI comfortably into the swingin'/counterculture '60s without rendering him an anachronism. In what could be called a dry run for Jim Rockford, Garner winningly embodied the downtrodden yet dogged detective while adding his trademark dash of ironic self effacement to the wearily wisecracking gumshoe.

Only recently getting into James Garner's earlier work, which so often happens with me. I know him for things he did in the 70's and forward, but was more than delighted with his work with Doris Day in The Thrill of It All (1963). He could move effortlessly between the genres, and all the women would swoon, and the men were all wanting to be like him.

He was all over TV when I was a lad THE GREAT ESCAPE aired every bank holiday and ROCKFORD FILES was huge.. I was too young for MAVERICK and not sure it was as big here as in USA)
Recommend MISTER BUDDWING from 1966
a sort of existential spin on the old amnesia plot... Garner encountering a trio of women who may or may not hold the key to his identity... Katharine Ross, Suzanne Pleshette and a blonde Jean simmons , and Angela Lansbury pops up too..
THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS wasn't bad either from a few years later also with Ross and June Allyson as you never imagined her !!!!
Would give MARLOWE another spin.
The two with Julie Andrews were high points.
HEALTH was very low key but altman fans should definitely check it out
TWILIGHT was a good quality late period turn in a decent film and he had a few good lines in MY FELLOW AMERICANS
You can keep MURPHY'S ROMANCE - I don't like her... I really don't like her...
Sank No Deeper? SUNSET was hideous although he gave co-star Willis a pasting in the screen charm stakes. Ditto Mel and MAVERICK.THE FAN was below his standard.

Skin Game (1971) ANOTHER SATIRE

timshelboyMy Fellow Americans (1996) was pretty funny, at least I thought so. [Matt Douglas' made-up words to "Hail to the Chief"]
Matt Douglas (James Garner): Hail to the chief, if you don't, I'll have to kill you. I am the chief, so you better watch your step, you bastards.

I think my favourite gag was Garner admitting that the most fulfilling thing he did as president was NOT meeting Nelson Mandela but getting to hear Ella sing.....

I loved him with Julie Andrews in Victor victoria. And Americanization of Emily. I wish they had made more films. He was a perfect romantic mate for her, bringing out her humor, her at ease side. I wish they had made Torn curta8n . It would have been a much better film. Garner would not have been less believable as a top physicist that PAUL Newman If anyone ever wants to know what we mean by chemistry , show them Torn Curtain. I may not be able to say what it is but I sure know when it is not there
I love Garner in Twilight. A wonderful change of pace and he is full of clever con man energy .
I love Sunset the film in which he plays Wyatt Earp, hired as an advisor for a Tom Mix film. The story arcs of the other characters are pretty unpleasant but his play with Bruce Willis is fun. They apparently did not get on very well, and Garner felt Willis was a spoiled , undisciplined clod who did not know his lines. There is a great scene where Earp is watching the filming of OK Corral with lots of clever shots, dodging bullets and so on. The director asks Earp if thatβs how it was. They flash back to a cut of Garner as Earp in Hour of the Gun, simply walking toward the Clantons and firing, no gymnastics , no cover, just facing bullets. He looked at the director and said, β yeah, thatβs pretty much the way it wasβ. It was such an economical way to show how little Earp was into this frou frou, that he had the kind of memories men at war have, things they cannot begin to explain to outsiders. I wish the rest of the film was as good as Garnerβs performance.
Another often overlooked Garner film is 36 Hours. He has been captured by Germans and placed in a special camp made to look like a hospital . He is drugged and they try to convince him he is awakening from a coma during which the war has been won. Itβs all an effort to trick him into revealing what he knows about DDAY. ROD Stewart as the German Doctor is great, Eva Marie Saint as a German forced to take part is great, and Garner is great , genial confused, slowly realizing something is off. It is definitely worth a look.
