Beloved and affable actor James Garner (1928-2014) was born on this date 91 years ago in Norman, Oklahoma as James Scott Bumgarner. Moving back and forth between movies and TV over the years, he gained a loyal fan base and gained the respect of his peers. He left us all far too soon and has been greatly missed ever since. Some of his final acting work included supplying the voice for Shazam! in animated movies. He would have been ideal casting for a live-action version if made years ago, I think! All of the James Garner movies I've seen, so far: The Girl He Left Behind The Great Escape HealtH Victor/Victoria Tank Murphy's Romance Sunset The Distinguished Gentleman Fire in the Sky Maverick My Fellow Americans Twilight (1998) Space Cowboys Atlantis: The Lost Empire Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood The Notebook

Great actor who was superb in anything he did. A class act all the way.

I admired him ever since I watched Maverick when I was a tike – clever, quirky, aloof from the commonplace.

Very favorite role -- as the no-nonsense town druggist in MURPHY'S ROMANCE
his only Oscar nom ... and he should have been a winner for it.

Pretty cool actor. Liked his villainous turn in of all things, Atlantis: the Lost Empire.

Affable is the perfect word for him. In addition to his movies, I loved him in the TV series The Rockford Files.

Ha Bumgarner. I watched Maverick and some Rockford Files. He also did a Polaroid commercial! I can recall those amusing Polaroid commercials that he made with actress Mariette Hartley -- playing his wife who would do a slow-burn when Jim would be flirtatious with an attractive photo subject.

This is more like the real Garner MURPHY'S ROMANCE One of my favorite Garner Roles … (out of many many many !) His interplay with Brian Kerwin as Sally's ex-hubby were a delight (they even wound up dancing together in one scene).

mattgarth It's a " rom-com" without being too "girly-cutesy" to tolerate ! Difficult to find that fine line but they sure did with this one. Even the kid in it is "non-cringe-worthy"! Good all around pick up your spirits movie.

An imminently watchable and excellent actor, with a heart of gold. He grew up on the "wrong side of the tracks" in Norman during the Depression and never forgot his roots. I love him in everything, but I'm I'm especially fond of THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY (be sure to see that when you get a chance; it's terrific, with a screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky), MURPHY'S ROMANCE, and VICTOR/VICTORIA. He and Julie Andrews had great chemistry together.
Looks good, I'll have to find it someday. Loved him with Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria. Garner says this was his favorite of all his own movies.
