He was a public advocate for marijuana legalization in the last decade of his life.
Kudos to Jim.

Most recent viewing of his work, Marlowe (1969). He was effortlessly affable as Philip Marlowe, private investigator.

Loved him in everything he did. His short-lived Western series 'Nichols' was a little forgotten gem. Always had a soft spot for his film 'Cash McCall', a bit of early Sixties hokum based on the equally hokey Cameron Hawley novel: www.imdb.com/video/vi1614921241/?ref_=ttvi_vi_imdb_1

In GRAND PRIX he is totally humorless. Interesting contrast from what I remember him best for.

I always liked Up Periscope. I know Garner said it was a piece of crap that he was stuck doing under contract with WB, but it was a staple on our local UHF channel growing up. Seems like it came on quite a bit but especially on Memorial Day or Veterans Day.
Grand Prix was a good one. He, Paul Newman, and Steve McQueen were the real thing as they did their own driving off screen in various races. Even if the film was a bit overly dramatic you knew Garner was trying to make it look like the real deal.

FIRE IN THE SKY was a poor role for him. I don't think it gave him much to do. I suppose he was the right choice for being a skeptical good ol' boy, but he was mostly a sounding board for the other characters. He didn't do sci-fi stuff normally did he? I can't think of any horror or sci-fi he did other than that one. Maybe some animation?

He has one line in The Pink Jungle which I regard fondly:
"I'm an artist. I am not supposed to be practical."
