Folks, don't you think it is time to quit on F1? I haven't seen a good race since Heinz Harald-Frentzen won the French Grand Prix back in 1999. Come join us Indy Car fans. Today's shootout for the Iddy 500 pole was a thousands more times exciting than today's F1 "race." Come watch the Indy 500 next Sunday. Fernando Alonso is in it. Didn't qualify too well, but he'll be fun to watch. ![](https://hips.hearstapps.com/autoweek/assets/_R3I0473.jpg?crop=1xw:0.8888888888888888xh;center,top&resize=480:*) I watch both. Where did Will Power qualify? Will Power, surprisingly, bad spot - 22 Alonso is a bit worse - 26

Meh. Will's having a bad year, but his problems have been in-race, not qualifying until now.

I'll be watching the 500 too. I don't really bother watching oval qualifying because it doesn't seem to matter too much but i'm really looking forward to the race.
The F1 race was interesting but racing wise a bit boring. Hamilton's drive was impressive but Max's probably more so. He's doing one hell of a job peddling that Red Bull around so fast!
Did anyone see the MotoGP races? It had one of the luckiest escapes i've ever seen in it. I won't say anymore in case i spoil it for some one.

That was something.

Didn't qualify too well, but he'll be fun to watch. This deserves its own thread. I still love watching F1 qualifying because drivers & teams are all out. Races seem like coronation parades for Lewis. Racing when there are near automatics like Michael Phelps, Lance Armstrong, Jimmy Johnson, Schumacher, Lewis... is plain boring & unappealing. Sorry not sorry. What I hate most about F1 is crews & drivers still jockey within teams for placements? Like the f'n Tour de France? How's about this: encourage every single crew & driver to race balls out & fcuk the team politics. I grew up watching CART racing during the glory years of the late 80's-early 90's. At least a dozen deep of capable winners every single wkend... without anyone fighting to move up from 21st place to 19th over 2hrs of racing like I feel today's F1 delivers. I would actually create a FIA global race trophy for F1... a trophy awarded to the team/driver who completed the full schedule in the shortest cumulative time. I know the Tour de France has several jerseys to compete for, not just the Yellow... & this would be akin to that. FedEx Cup tries a bit for that also in golf. As for the Indy 500, the race itself remains flawless. It's the Indy politics that water it down. I would turn Indy 500 into a full racing 'major' of sorts - requiring at least 4 teams/drivers from the likes of F1, NASCAR, & several other pro circuits. The race already feels embarrassed about being an IRL stop, just go full on & make it literally the world's greatest race. I wouldn't even demand the top ranked drivers/points getters necessarily, but I want the Indy 500 to at least invite greater depth & breadth of competition. I really liked when Montoya crossed over from CART to win the IRL's Indy 500.

It is open to drivers from disciplines. Always been that way. F1 drivers Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Fittipaldi, Andretti (and a few others) have won the thing. Many F1 drivers have participated. Same with NASCAR drivers and sportscar drivers. Heck, this year the Indy 500 once again has F1 Champion Alonso racing. Contracts and the amount of money drivers make in their own discipline make it more difficult for drivers from other series to compete in the Indy 500, but it is still open for all. A NASCAR driver or an Indy Car driver can not go race in the Monaco GP, but in Indy all are welcome. And many top drivers have given it a go.

I guess I just wish it were more concrete & expected, rather than a lark for some as it seems. I feel like sometimes it's drivers/crews who want it crossed off their bucket list. I'd prefer if it were a circled date on the entire international racing calendar - far more substantially than it already is.

I'd prefer if it were a circled date on the entire international racing calendar - far more substantially than it already is. I see your point. I do think it is the money thing. Indy 500 still pays a sizeable amount to the winner (last year Pagenaud got two and a half million for the win), and back in the day that big cash prize was certainly an incentive. But Lewis Hamilton is earning over 50 million a year. Try to win the Indy 500 - a month long endeavor - for 3 million bucks is no longer an incentive for highly paid drivers in other disciplines. And as for the glory of winning the thing, that has faded. At one time it was, along with heavyweight champion of the world, probably the biggest individual prize in sport. No longer. Oh, race fans still admire the winner, but regular Joe's no longer do. (And they once did. Non-race fans, heck, non-sports fans could always tell you who Mario Andretti or AJ Foyt or an Unser were.) The glory is now a thing of the past.

It was long Sunday on the couch with British Superbikes, MotoGP and the Indy 500 but it was a cracking day of racing!
Man there has been a serious amount of money involved in the crashes at the last two MotoGP rounds in Austria. Two Yamaha M1's, one Avintia Ducati and two Moto2 bikes completely destroyed. Another well shaken up running order and another great podium. I'm so pleased for the winning team having supported them for many years for hiring so many brits to ride their bikes.
The Indy 500 was a tense race. Not as many thrilling passes as some previous years but i still thoroughly enjoyed it. Shame it didn't go green to the flag.

Spa-Francorchamps, one of my favorite circuits.
Mercedes lock out the front row, as per usual.
Verstappen is third biting at the heels of Bottas. The first corner is going to be interesting.
Congratulations to Dannny Ric in coming 4th, his highest qualy ever at Spa.
Albon's 5th, within half a second of Max. Hopefully, he can put the silly mistakes behind him and race.
The Ferraris, though. An absolute embarrassment! Spa is famous for it's long straights, and the Ferrari car is supposedly famed for it's straight line speed, but they barely scrapped into Q2. It does lend credence to the accusations of cheating last year. How can a car suddenly underperform like this? They're being outqualified by Alphatauri! Maybe I should reserve criticisms until next week when the new rules come in, and nobody can twist the dial to 'party mode', but still, by anyone's measurement it's pretty pathetic.
What are your thoughts on the engine modes ban, btw. Do you think it'll tighten up the field, or make no difference?
Anyway, really looking forward to tomorrow...

I fricking love Spa, I hope it rains, really opens the field up then. Tremendous bends there.

The accusations were pretty much confirmed when they made a deal with the FIA and they had to rebuild their engine for this year. Monza is going to be even worse for them.
The one race mode for the weekend, we will see how it works out. They(fia) are aslo doing it so they can monitor a few things better. They seem to think teams have been screwing with the ERS deployment.

Gasly and Leclerc having flying start relatively. Good midfield action going on involving Gassly, Leclerc, Perez and Lando.
Lando needs to show same promise as he did during first few races of the season.

Safety car lap 12 - That could have been nasty, Russell unlucky.

Interesting. Gasly doesn't make a pit during this mess.
I hope and want to see Gasly finish well.

That was as dull as it gets. We needed rain to open the race up. No change first 3 from grid to black and white flag. Think I'll watch the Indy instead...

Sadly it is mercedes that is making this season dull. Apart from Mercedes all cars are very similar in performance to each other. Ricciardo and Gasly were awesome. I don't know who was the driver of the race among those 2.

The expected podium.
Top 3 nursing their tires at the end. Good for Ricciardo for getteing that extra point. Albon, still too slow, he had a crap strategy though. Well done Gasly. Those wheels coming of is not good. Its the second time now, I think. Both times with a gravel trap. Maybe the bouncing on the gravel is too much for those wheel tethers.
