In the article Theron complains that she was asked to play the mother of Gal Gadot (in Wonder Woman) who is only 9 years younger than herself. Clearly she doesn't understand about amazons.
In all fairness she does claim to not know much about Wonder Woman's mythology. Okay, fair enough. But since this event happened she must have found out about how amazons work, and she still chooses to tell the story as if she was slighted, instead of explaining what the misunderstanding was.
For those who don't know, amazons are ageless and immortal. So they could have asked her to play a 1000 year old amazon and it would have been the same. So...
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Charlize Theron, she's great and I think of her as one of the few actresses with balls enough to rough and tumble with the guys in movies. But this just seemed a little whiny to me.
Thoughts? She states the slap was being asked to play a mom because that is what Hollywood does to older actresses Sorry it's an insult to your fanboy sensibilities she was more focused on the age line Hollywood draws in the sand for actresses. Cybill Shepard addressed this problem years ago, pointing out Bruce Willis is 5 yrs her junior, but by the 00s Hollywood would more likely cast an actress 20 yrs her junior as his love interest while she would be cast as his mom. Less a comment on Wonder Woman & more a commentary on the Hollywood casting mentality It's not an insult to my fanboy anything. Don't assume what you don't know. You don't know me.
The point of my post wasn't whether or not she should be cast as an older person, but rather that she didn't realize that the reason they asked her was because the amazons are immortal and DONT AGE! So in fact she is INCORRECT about why they wanted to cast her. In other words there was no slap in the face. She just took it that way.
Kind've like you were incorrect that my fanboy whatever you assumed was offended.
There's no doubt that women are improperly cast, in many ways, in Hollywood. I get that. But THIS case wasn't one off them.
p.s. also, refer to the bolded in the original post for explanation... that you apparently also misunderstood.
p.s.s. please link to that Cybil Shepard/Bruce Willis story, cuz' I'm having a hard time believing it.

Connie Nielsen is so hot though, so I don't mind. Charlize probably gets offered too many things anyway. This! ^

It's the symbolism. They are saying "you are playing someone's mom." That is the key part. Doesn't matter if she is an ageless amazon or a divinity--it's basically saying "you are now out of leading woman parts" and only a year or two after she did Atomic Blonde. It's an insult to her--especially since she is more "alpha" than Gadot.

I'd much more prefer to think that she simply didn't know about the Amazons and their agelessness and that she simply felt insulted that she could be considered a mom to someone only a decade younger.

Career pride yes. She's a bigger star than Gadot and she is being asked to take a supporting role for her. In Connie Nielsen's case she was never a lead so it isn't a step down for her. For Theron it is.
How many leading actors have taken supporting roles in a superhero movie while maintaining their starring parts? Stallone doesn't seem to have any left except maybe Rambo (likely he is a supporting player in that) and he is much older than Theron.

She kinda has a point about female actors being cast aside in lead roles when they hit 40s

No, it's just plain pride. Anthony Hopkins had no issues playing supporting character to Chris Hemsworth. Same with Nicole Kidman and Jason Momoa, Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill. Just because you play a secondary character in a movie doesn't diminish your star status. A good number of A-listers don't mind playing supporting roles.

Thoughts? Yeah!
She didn't want to get stuck playing mummy, and older women, roles from now on.
Fair play to her too!

Anthony Hopkins was a major character in the Thor films.
Also; male actors tend to get much, much better characters to play than women.
Once they take the 'Mommy' role that's 'mostly' their main character days over.
And I think Charlize has a few more years to go yet.
Therefore: Anyone who claims she was being unreasonable is a massive bellend; and stupid.
Fact!

Strong secondary roles? Almost certainly.
Leading lady roles? Maybe.

You think Kidman is/was never as big as Theron? You just lost all credibility pal.

Yeah she's older but she has more future projects lined up for her than does Theron. So... that just proved your theory wrong.

Yeah she's older but she has more future projects lined up for her than does Theron. So... that just proved your theory wrong. But what kind of parts?
If she accepts a supporting role in another woman-led action series, it will diminish her perceived market value.
Yeah it's vain, but it makes business sense. As soon as she accepts one of those roles she is signaling she doesn't need to be main lead anymore. I notice she is in one upcoming film with Kidman and Margot Robbie and she is listed first.

Primarily leading lady parts. Like I said, it proves your theory wrong. The type of parts matter. Kidman seems to be switching to tv. Her last big feature film was Aquaman.
Theron also had the Fast and the Furious and Mad Max roles so she sees herself as remaining in a lead capacity in action films. If she was to play a nemesis that would be a different thing-but being asked to play the mother is a traditional signal of actresses losing their lead status (unless they switch to smaller budget dramas...).

So you're saying action/sci-fi movies are the only legitimate leading lady parts that you're taking into consideration.

So you're saying action/sci-fi movies are the only legitimate leading lady parts that you're taking into consideration. I am saying that Theron obviously feels that for the action film audience she can still be the lead-so she doesn't want to dilute that by appearing as the mother in someone else's action film. I think there is even discussions of turning her Mad Max character into a separate series.
