I didn't watch the video, but I am guessing that there is a simple pragmatic reason why the Bible is printed in two columns: Readability.
My Bible copy is printed in a rather small font (8 or 9 pt); there would be 80 or more characters per line in a one-column layout. I don't know if it would be more readable than a two-column layout.

Makes it easier to line things up when using the pages to roll joints.

I have switched to Kindle so I read it like a regular book.
If the print is small I imagine it is easier to locate stuff in 2 column mode, sorta like dictionaries.

Enjoy. <video> Because you can read a page a hundred times faster that a video can read it to you? I'm sorry, I don't mean to pick on you. I don't suppose using a video was your idea. I think the move to one column based on "flow" is misguided. Even the English is outdated and doesn't flow anyway, never mind the original languages. Remember "The Living Bible"? It was supposed to "flow" better too. Two columns will continue to make sense because the Bible is a huge book and needs to be "indexed."

It takes a lot more than that to make me feel picked on. Actually, I was looking for other videos and noticed that one, and it was recently uploaded so I thought it might be the basis for an on-topic thread to balance out the "progressive" social justice warrioring that goes on here. I would seriously like to see a difference between this board and the old one. Seriously. If Cinemachinery and his scurvy crew have their way, it will be a clone of the old board.

It also was done for reasons of tradition as books were replacing scrolls. I think one column would take some getting used to.

Not all bibles are printed this way eg new Jerusalem bible or good news bible Seems like it would be something of an adjustment after a lifetime of seeing the two-column format.

Actually I just checked and the good news bible I have is in the two column format.. oops. But I am nearly sure another version I had of the good news bible was in the plain book format.. I can't remember for sure. The new Jerusalem I have is in the single column format. Doesn't take too much getting used to I don't think .. I never really noticed the columns until I saw this thread tbh

And I think it would be cool if it was one column per page in large print and with a space between each verse. That would be very easy to read, but can you imagine how much thicker it would be? Even after the Council of Nicaea, Martin Luther, and King James whittled it down, it's still a mighty thick book.

The fine paper is nice, makes a nice sound as you turn the pages. I should start reading the bible again in book form. These days I only catch excerpts online ad hoc. Do you read the bible daily?

Gotta get me one of those Kindle things someday. Kindle Fire's play videos. So you can get a Kindle and people will think you might be reading a book (and listening to music whilst doing so - in case you need to explain the head phones), but in reality you can continue to get all your worldly knowledge from Youtube videos and never have to read anything. Result, eh? No point in risking getting any new facts in is there?

Fair play to you for making an effort with your faith! Especially in the workplace. A good way to start a workday -as in focusing the mind on what counts 😀

The Herald ErjenThat's interesting. I always thought it was just to make it easier to read, like newspaper columns.

The Herald Erjen That's interesting. I always thought it was just to make it easier to read, like newspaper columns. I suppose I thought that too. Can't imagine reading a newspaper from one side of the page to the other. It's one of those things that you accept as "the way it is," and don't dwell on it for very long.
