Ardian Syaf, an Indonesian Muslim Marvel artist has snuck in a veiled message against the Christian governor of Jakarta in the latest issue of X-Men Gold: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-39550662
More details and discussion here: scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/6909184.html
What strikes me as odd is paralleling Jakarta's Muslims accepting a Christian governor with the X-Men accepting a Jewish leader in Kitty Pryde. The X-Men, to my knowledge, have only one Muslim member (Dust). And all their previous leaders were from a Christian background. And of course, the high concept behind X-Men was anti-bigotry. I guess Syaf just saw a very vague similarity to what was going on in Indonesia and ran with it. Maybe he even thought the vagueness of the connection would mean he could get away with it. More fool him I guess.

Marvel has long been trying to write off it's X-men/mutant line.....
It wouldn't be surprising if they were doing this intentionally.

The panel that has the "212" on the wall, also has Jew next to Kitty's head, which is Jewelry but the only completely unobscured are the first three. I thought Storm had led the X-Men at one point as it not Christian (but I could be mistaken on both counts). Still the guy is a fool for thinking he might get away with it.

Marvel has long been trying to write off it's X-men/mutant line..... Yeah I've heard that too, because they don't own the movie rights. Personally I quite like that the X-Men characters aren't being forced into the already bloated Marvel Movie Universe (bar The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver)

There is a website somewhere that states the various superhero religions...but off the top of my head...Storm thought of herself as a God, not sure what that qualifies as...Wolverine is closest to Buddhism, Magneto is Jewish...They've all led or been a dominant leader of the group at various times. I think Beast considers himself agnostic now but he may align with Christianity in his earlier years.

Fox has enough material to make new XMen movies for decades to come. No point in sabotaging your own work.

I was not really aware that XMen were even considered in terms of religion except rememebring that Nightcrawler at one time was a devout Catholic.
It always seemed silly that comic books would even bother referencing religion since they actually have explained the history of the universe many times over.
Of course, all of that is irrelevant to the fact that the artist was a goober.

I didn't say that it made sense to me... That's why there's such an effort to switch the emphasis from "mutant" to "Inhuman"... They own the rights to the term. Marvel also detest that they aren't making as much money in merchandising as Fox doesn't really have any of their heroes in "official" costume and design. Marvel still loves Deadpool... as Deadpool looks like Deadpool in the film(s). But.. The way that Marvel is dismantling their "X-verse" does sicken to me a tad.. as those were some of my most-beloved characters in my childhood... and watching them go out in such an inglorious way..

Most of the others are either non-religious or keep it to themselves. But they're mostly from areas that are predominantly Christian.

what's even odder is why would an x-men be wasting time involved in any religion.

The danger would be that the only way people would recognize the X Men would be in movie form since I assume Fox could keep making them. Thus they would lose what has to be a profitable comic book stream and still never have the movie rights. Fox would be insane too if they gave up the brand without at least a billion or two from Marvel. The X Men are worth it. I really think Fantastic Four would be a better fit and they should be able to get that for a big discount.

It would be so awesome if they would just follow the early Claremont/Byrne story and center it all on Jean Grey rather than Wolverine. She is the Anakin Skywalker story we deserve. It's an amazing storyline that effects have caught up to. In comparison to the Marvel & DC flicks, the Xmen ones still seem cheap by comparison.

I was a big fan of the Byrne ones and the Wolfman stories before it. I haven't read an actual Marvel comic in many a moon. Again, a good movie could reignite interest.

I don;t even know if I liked them as much as I liked their villains.
They had the most consistently enjoyable bad guys and any story John Byrne did about Galactus was a classic to me.

I almost feel that way about Flash. I do like Flash, all of em, but it's his villains that really draw me in and carry my interests. The Rogues, Grodd, Professor Zoom and Zoom are all fantastic in their encounters with the Scarlet Speedster.

Yeah, I read that someone had made that accusation about the word Jew being there but it looks to me like "Jewel" is completely unobscured. He's fully admitted to posting the Quran references but not to that. It looks like a bit of a reach to me.
