I was wrong. AB isn't the trainwreck, it's the entire organization. Giving Gruden 34 trillion a year. trading Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper, the move to Vegas, a bundle of bad draft picks. In 2016, the Raiders were 12-4 and could have made a SB run if Derek Carr hadn't got hurt. I thought they were the team to dethrone to Patriots in the AFC. Now they are a joke. What happened to "Commitment to Excellence" and "Pride and Poise"? The Raiders have seriously been a joke since around 1992 or so. What happened? Al Davis got old, and instead of allowing someone from the outside take the reins (say a Jon Gruden, perhaps), always had the idea of his son Marc Davis take over. Of course, Marc Davis is a bumbling fool who thinks a good hairstyle is the "Moe Howard" look. So obviously running a football team might be beyond his limited reach. This is nothing new with the Raiders, other than the few years of Gruden's first coaching stint, the Silver and Black have been completely irrelevant and a major joke. Too bad when you think about how cool that team was in the 70's and the 80's. Most of you here never experienced the cool Oakland Raiders. They really were one of the great things of the NFL in those days.

This surprises anyone? If Ray Rice, Rae Carruth, OJ Simpson, or Jeffrey Dahmer could help a team without affecting its bottom line, a team would sign them. For the other end of this equation, see Colin Kaepernick.

Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, a great offensive line, many good defensive players, including Khalil Mack. Tied for the AFC West with KC. Carr broke his leg in the last game which killed their playoff chances but they looked like a contender in 2017. 10-22 since, traded Cooper and Mack and been Team Turmoil. The 70's Raiders were awesome. Closest think I've ever had to a 2nd team. 150 year old George Blanda still plugging along, Cliff Brance and his stickup, jack Tatum, Ted Hendicks, "The Mad Stork", Fred Bilitnikoff, "The Snake" Ken Stabler, John Madden. And they were the Original "Cardiac Kids". The Heidi Game and Dave Caspar's "Holy Roller" play being two examples.

So back then - Were the Raiders considered the Evil Empire so to speak and the Steelers and Cowboys pretty much 'the good guys' and the guys in white hats. Or was the Steel Curtain kind of like an anti-hero with the Cowboys (America's Team) considered - 'the good guy'. i.e. outside of their own cities - what was the national perception of each team.....

I don't know about the Steelers being "good guys" (CheetahCandy will kill me for this), but the Cowpokers sure were. I got so sick of the aura around them. The America's Team crap, the horse shit that Texas Stadium had the hole in the roof so God could watch his favorite team blah blah blah. I was an American and they weren't my team. I loved Dwight Clark and Joe Montana knocking them out as much as any Niners fan. Now I really hate them. And the Raiders were bad guys. A lot of it was unjust because of Jack Tatum and Darryl Stingley (a hard but legal hit). East to be the bad guys when you wear black. They looked the part.

I’ve always hated the Cowboys for as long as I followed football, but as a kid other than the Eagles I liked the Raiders, the Steelers, the Air Coryell Chargers, Montana’s 49ers (but not Young’s). All those teams had great larger than life players. As an adult, yeah the Raiders were probably dirty, but a lot of teams were back then. But as a kid I thought they were all great.

They were a team of outcasts, guys like Ted Hendricks, Mike Haynes, and Jim Plunkett were cast off of other teams as failures but became Hall of Famers with the Silver and Black. You had wide receivers practically marinated in Stick-um, a substance which prevented drops that the NFL would eventually ban. Receivers on other teams tried it without much success, the Raiders lived on it. You had a quarterback, Kenny Stabler, who looked like he belonged in Lynyrd Skynyrd. You had maybe the most evil player in history, Jack Tatum, roaming around at free safety like a great white, waiting to attack. (Though truthfully the Daryrl Stingley play was as much Steve Grogan's fault as Tatum). You also had a crazy coach in John Madden stalking the sidelines. But make no mistake, the real reason the Raiders were THE RAAAAAAAAIDERS was one man: Al Davis. He was the man behind all of it, one of the most brilliant minds in NFL history. The guy seriously looked like a Mafioso head in those days, (and many folks thought that was no joke). Al Davis was the Donald Trump of the NFL, beloved by fans and players and totally despised by the elite and media. You want uncomfortable? Watch the tapes of Pete Rozelle handing the Vince Lombardi trophy to a sneering Al Davis. Ah, those were the days...... Can't imagine how a in his prime Al Davis would have dealt with Roger Goodell. Boggles the mind.

Yeah, the Cowboys were always considered the "good guys" and that got real nauseating for anyone who wasn't buying it. But at least in those days, they were an actual successful team. And Roger Staubach did fit the part of Captain America. The Cowboys since the mid-90's have only been a slightly more successful team than the Raiders, yet are constantly overhyped. All those teams you've mentioned were ones I loved to watch as well. I'll also throw in the Vikings of the 70's into the mix. Before they went indoors and lost their balls. The Oilers were also a favorite back then.

Raiders did a lot of reclamation projects. Darryl Lamonica, Lyle Alzado, George Blanda, Burgess Owens, John Matuszek, Todd Christiansen EDIT: Forgot about the handlebar mustachioed Ben Davidson. Reclamation project, castoff from the Redskins. He nearly killed Len Dawson, spearing him after he laid on the ground in pain. He nearly decapitated Joe Namath. And he had some acting career. Did MASH (the movie) and a lot of Miller Light ads. That was another thing about the Raiders, they had personality.

They were like a less successful version of those Bills teams, just couldn’t ever get over the hump. Now they’re the Titans and probably one of the three most boring teams in the league.

Uh, okay.

The Raiders fined Brown $215,073.53 Friday night for conduct detrimental to the team on Sept. 4 and then voided the more than $29 million in guaranteed money in his deal.
