Gavin MacLeod returns as "Big Chicken" in "The Box" (S01E16). He looks a little heavier than I remember him on Love Boat He was some kind of Arabian nights bad guy in a mid 60s movie--that was the most bizarre thing I saw him in.

I downloaded that one. Another thing with the old show is how they use the theme music as mood for the episodes-like they have a slow melancholy variation of the theme tune playing during their more intense dramatic scenes.
Also, we get to see what Chin Ho Kelly and Kana Kalakaua are doing when they aren't at the office. I see from the wiki page that the secretary gets replaced by season 2!
I have an old record of tv show themes they put out-i.e. the Batman theme:

I downloaded that one. I see from the wiki page that the secretary gets replaced by season 2! I downloaded that one too. And added it to the list of My least favorite episodes of Hawaii Five-O (Seasons 1-9). Yes the secretary gets replaced with Peggy Ryan, the same actress who played Mildred, the Governor's secretary, in the first episode. But as McGarrett's secretary she plays a different character, Jenny, who works for McGarrett a long time, from Season 2 through Season 8. The character is even mentioned in Season 9, although she never appears. In the episode "Dealer's Choice... Blackmail", McGarrett records a message for "Jenny". "Dealer's Choice" was the fourth episode filmed for Season 9. Perhaps at this point in the production there was still hope that "Jenny" (Peggy Ryan) would return.

Here's a question. In the titles sequence, is the woman running on the beach (I assume also the one seen in closeup) famous? I had assumed she was Nancy Kwan from the pilot originally. Sure got a lot of promotion for someone unknown.

Twenty-Four Karat Kill --this was interesting in that Chin Ho almost buys it--they mention his wife--but I am confused--Dano says he is calling the wife--but he calls the secretary--she was married to Chin Ho? She didnt act like she was his wife. Anyway, the undercover agent--I thought to myself--she looks familiar but I am not sure who she is, but the name Marj Dusay/Spock's Brain came to mind, and sure enough I was right! How about that. McGarrett seemed more cheerful in this episode despite being a hard ass. I saw in a casual search that Pamela Franklin did a Hawaii Five-0! I have to wait five seasons!

No, Chin Ho wasn't married to the secretary. It's been a while since I last saw this one, but Danno was probably having the secretary place the call. I'm surprised you didn't mention the big blooper that occurs in this episode - Treasury agent Philip Grey is played by Richard Denning, the same actor who played Governor Paul Jameson on the series. Denning was probably filling in for another actor who became unavailable, but this blooper had long-lasting repercussions. James Heinz had worked on the show since the beginning, but quit his post of Hollywood producer after the ninth season. In the tenth season, thanks to the turnover and shoddy research, the Governor is being called "Phil" and "Philip" because of "Twenty-Four Karat Kill".

I noticed that--I assumed it was the governor at first and then figured it was one of those things like the secretary swap you mentioned.
But with the secretary and the wife--that's what was strange-he didn't say: "tell his wife" and she didn't say "oh good I will tell her" either. One would think they knew her well enough to mention her more directly!

We do know that Five-O office had multiple phone lines. It's possible that the Ioliani Palace phone system could let the secretary dial the number and then transfer the call to Danno's phone.

Danno tells Steve he told her to get a cup of coffee--so we assume she is waiting in the lobby right? Then when they hear he is going to be fine he says "I'll tell Mrs Kelly and call May with the good news."
He goes into the hospital lobby where we expect her to be waiting instead-he goes to the phone and calls the secretary.
The mysterious Mrs Chin Ho Kelly...

The mysterious Mrs Chin Ho Kelly... Not so mysterious, as we get to see her on screen in S02E20 “Cry, Lie”.

Come to think of it-that episode had a lot of scene cutting--like it would have made sense to see Chin Ho getting attacked and we don't see the gold smuggler leave the gambling room when the police show up.

THE WAYS OF LOVE
McGarrett is one cool daddio going undercover as a criminal to find out where some jewels are stashed. Interesting for the way it draws out the thief and is a little sad too. I see the next scheduled episode gets a measly 6.7 rating. Man I have a lot of episodes to get through just to make it the end of 1968.

According to Mike Quigley at The Hawaii Five-O Home Page, "The Ways of Love" and the next episode, "No Blue Skies", have the same rating: 2.5 out of 4. I have finished my own rewatch of Season 1 and have moved on to Season 2.

I thought it was a bit bland. Season 1 is a good start for the series, but it's far from my favorite season. The only Season 1 episode to make my favorite episodes list is the two-part "Once Upon a Time".

I like revisiting these shows for the nostalgia and time capsule element but this one was the most dud-ish for me so far. I was going to watch a Kolchak instead but forgot my plan! Coincidentally the third planned Kolchak movie was to be set in Hawaii.
In the script John Carradine's character says to him that he is already dressed for the role of a beach bum.
There's an episode of 5-0 with Simon Oakland and Barry Atwater I heard good things about. I am so far behind...I'll never get out of season 1.

I have trouble buying McGarrett as an undercover guy. Sure it's possible he did that in his youth but he comes across as so hard -edged I can't picture him playing a role like that, especially for the length of time he would have had to in the prison.

You must be referring to The Reunion (Season 3 | Episode 8). Yes, that's a very good episode. Instead of alternating series each week like you do, maybe you could stick with one show and watch it until the end of the season, then switch to another show and watch that to the end of the season. You've made similar comments about being stuck in Season 1 of “The Wild Wild West”.
