"Neckbeard" is a pejorative term and stereotype for men who exhibit characteristics such as social awkwardness, underachievement or pretentiousness.
**maybe Diogenes the cynic would qualify as a neckbeard but I doubt he was overweight.

My understanding is that the term is applied to someone who grows a beard to hide excess flab/fat in the neck area. George Lucas didn't do that. He's had his beard since his early days as a filmmaker when he was trim.

If he got it after Star Wars it may have been a gesture of pretentiousness he copied from Frances Ford Coppola.
But he had the beard when he was thin so...

I'm not sure what's pretentious about a beard, but he's had the beard years before Star Wars at least while working on THX-1138 (1971) and American Graffiti (1973).

I'm not sure what's pretentious about a beard, I meant that was what the definition of neckbeard I found said--I guess a fat chin might be "social awkwardness." Anyway Coppola is known for being pretentious and Lucas has also talked in a way that suggested the same (lofty origins of Star Wars etc).

Well, did he even have one?
Anyway, he at least didn’t compulsively bicker over what he wanted.

"Neckbeard" ROTFWL! YES... George Lucas is really one of those Alien creatures from "Men in Black: International" (2019): I don't know who the man is, who we all THINK is "George Lucas", that wears him.

Everything he made after Godfather. Lucas's ex-wife said fame went to Coppola's head.

Everything he made after Godfather. Lucas's ex-wife said fame went to Coppola's head. Did she elaborate? I'm curious to hear about this because while Coppola had a lot of industry recognition, financially he's been in a lot tight spots that one would think would keep him humble. For example, Coppola never wanted to do a sequel to The Godfather and ended up doing two due to needing the money each time. He went bankrupt 3 times. American Zoetrope (his company) almost collapsed after backing George Lucas' THX-1138, which didn't do well at all.

She and Lucas talked about it and how shocked they were by his behavior. But she suggested Lucas copied the lifestyle Coppola had of buying a vineyard --Lucas was too busy building Skywalker ranch to focus on ROTJ etc. I cant recall the exact words--you can find the interview on the Secret History of Star Wars site.

Everything he made after Godfather. Lucas's ex-wife said fame went to Coppola's head. this is supposed to substantiate your claim that "Coppola is known for being pretentious"...? Masterpieces like Godfather II or Apocalypse Now that stood the test of time...? An obscure unsubstantiated statement by an obscure ex-wife; do you refer to the person who suggested that she "saved" StarWars in edit, despite there being a 3 person editor team plus Lucas. LOL. Did you know that monkeys would find toilet paper pretentious?

the monkey needs not to explain the perceived pretentiousness to the ant any more than you to the monkey. The same applies to an accomplished filmmaker like FFC to a layman film critic like you. What you perceive as pretentious is a nothing but a projection of your personal incredulity. In other words: The one eyed man may be king among the blind, yet he still lacks depth perception.
