It would not have made a billion dollars without that connection. No one ever said that every movie involving Batman can make a billion dollars, but it’s ridiculous to suggest that Joker would’ve made nearly as much money as it did without the Batman connections. A bunch of the people who saw the movie are mainstream audience members who don’t normally care for character studies. The movie proved that people are still hungry for more Batman stories. And, again, I disagree. It's not that I don't respect your opinion, it's just that it's only based on an assumption. The Joker made a million bucks not because "people are still hungry for more Batman stories" but because it was a good movie that ended up with a lot of good word of mouth. Because if it was true that people are still hungry for more Batman stories then Birds of Prey should be making more than it is. The Batwoman TV show shouldn't be getting such low viewership. A lot more hype should be surrounding the new Batman movie with Robert Pattinson. Gotham wouldn't have ended after only 5 seasons. I'm not saying Joker's connection to Batman didn't help, of course it did. Of course it put some more butts in seats in the theater. But that would have only resulted in a very small percentage of it's income. By and large it was as successful as it was because it was a good movie, and the novelty that it wasn't a superhero movie but something else entirely probably helped as well. Plenty of good movies with good word of mouth are released every year. They don’t all make a billion dollars. Besides, the movie broke the October OW record. Instead of saying that BoP underperformed because Harley Quinn is associated with Batman, it would be much more accurate to say that it underperformed because it’s a spin-off of a movie that no one liked. Suicide Squad is a universally hated movie that had bad word of mouth, and Birds of Prey looked like more of the same thing to a lot of people. Secondly, the Batwoman TV show getting low ratings is hardly a surprise. Television is dying. More and more people are cutting the chord these days in favor of streaming. That’s an issue that has affected all the CW DC shows. The series finale of Arrow couldn’t even break a million views. People just don’t care about network or cable television anymore. It doesn’t help that the marketing for the show was pretty bad. Lastly, how do you know how much hype there is surrounding the Robert Pattinson movie? The movie is more than a year away. There hasn’t even been an image of Robert Pattinson in the suit yet. Give it time before jumping to the conclusion that there’s not much hype surrounding it.

Participation trophies weren't a thing? Twitter doesn't over-react to everything? Gamergate didn't happen? Sorry. I'm a 59 yr old gal. I've seen my share of how guys treat gals. I thought we were past that era when I was raising my kid, but still ran into it. There's always been the jokes like "take my wife, please " or about how incompetent guys are taking care of themselves. That's the normal men are from mars/women from venus stuff. But the patriarchy is real, dude. This has nothing to do with what i asked. What, that boys can't play with dolls? Action figures. Boys cant wear pink? DBZ-Vegeta wears a pink shirt in the Trunks/Cell story & he's pretty bad-ass. Boys can't stay ay home with the kids? Mr. Mom. So give me some enlightenment toward the things boys are told they can't do that girls do that shuts down their future dreams

The marketing was lackluster. It’s kind of like how with all the marvel movies, you feel obligated to see it or piqued by the hype. With this, it was kind of like “Eh, what do you think? You think we should see that this weekend? Oh you got plans this weekend? Well what about next week? You’re still busy?” It’s weird because most of the time, I’ll give the DCEU this. The majority of their trailers are awesome. This and Justice League being the exception.

1. People grew to hate Suicide Squad 2. Bad release date (February, really?) Well, they are trying to be Deadpool. Bringing the movie out in February goes along with that.

This is a Walter Hamada production. His MO is producing low budget films that trun a decent profit. Look at his resume: "The Conjuring", "Anabelle", "Lights Out", "It", and the Nun, just to name a few. All of those had low budgets and made orders of magnitude more than they cost to produce. BoP was made for $84 million. If you think it won't make more than 5X that after 13 weeks, you're only fooling yourself. You really believe BOP will make $420 million? I'll take that bet.

This is the second weekend and its already made $145 million and there's still 10 to 12 weeks left in release.

With diminishing returns each following week. Shazam was over $200 million at this point, and ended up just shy of $370 worldwide. No way BOP even gets to that total.

Coronavirus concerns would have effected the Asian markets.
